- HE Cardinal Michael Fitzgerald. This lecture was recorded at the Von Hügel Institute for Critical Catholic Inquiry, St Edmund's College, University of Cambridge, on 7 February 2020.
Cardinal Michael Fitzgerald is a member of the Society of Missionaries of Africa. He was the Director of the Pontifical Institute of Arabic and Islamic Studies (1972-1978). He worked in the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue as Secretary (1987-2002) and then as President (2002-2006). He then served as Papal Nuncio in Egypt (2006-2012). Now retired, he resides in Liverpool. He was created Cardinal by Pope Francis on 5 October 2019.
The Von Hügel Institute for Critical Catholic Inquiry exists to promote mutual enrichment between the best of the secular academy and the Catholic traditions of theology, philosophy and ethics through events, research, and contributions to the public square. Our annual lecture showcases the best of this interdisciplinary thinking anchored in a universal or ‘catholic’ way of looking at the world.
