China Plans To Strip Mine The Moon For Rare Helium-3
"Chinese state media has reported the service module of test lunar orbiter has successfully began orbiting the Moon and the lunar mission will see the Chang'e 5 spacecraft perform a soft landing on the surface of the Moon, where it will collect four pounds of rock and soil samples before returning home, China Topix reported."

China Reaches Moon Orbit, Wants to Mine Very Rare, Energy Dense Element
"China's has reached a new milestone in its space program - its latest spacecraft service module has entered orbit around the moon, after being successfully tested on Earth a few months ago."

How Lunar Soil Could Power the Future
"The moon is once again a popular destination, as several space-faring nations are talking about setting up bases there. One reason would be to mine fuel for future fusion reactors."

Just... please don't fuck up the moon. I don't know how we'll manage, but I know us humans will do it some way some how.

I wish we could apply the Space treaty to planet Earth.

Candu reactors can make helium 3. Deuterium absorbs a neutron and becomes tritium, that then decays (HL12 years) into He3. LFTR reactors can turn lithium in their coolant salt into tritium and that becomes He3, too. Best to store it as it's oxide (tritium water) form so the He3 can fizz out for collection.

I have a dream. That one day, humanity unite as one and act together for the benefit of all.

I think it is appeal to the idea where governments merge with no central body.

The moon sounds like the perfect place for space lawyers, we should send them all
there right away

As a Chinese citizen I still don't know our national plan of exploitation of the moon however, you, as a foreigner know our plan. How can that be possible.lol.Are you

several countries were making plans to harvest helium3 from the moon including the US for the purpose of using it for nuclear fusion. my understanding is that so far the attempts at fusing hydrogen has been stalled due to the violent beatings the containment walls receive is too difficult to control, whereas fusing helium3 is a more stable reaction

So what will the aliens who live on the moon think about that?! LOL

NASA Are also looking to do this, I was reading last week, Seems like a good idea if they can come up with a way to get it up and down in space.. Can't imagine the whole $2million per LB will work - LOL :)

Scientists have apparently got a working 3D printer that can make objects from simulated moon dust. They have made an artificial dust to match that of real moon dust as close as possible due to the lack of samples available to use on earth and the fact that at the moment real moon dust samples are to rare to use in that way.
The idea is to build a bigger version of the 3D printer to ship to and assemble on the moon. They can then 3D print parts for a moon-base using the moon dust on the surface as the main material for it's construction. The cost to send all the materials from earth to the moon to build a moon base at this present time is prohibitively expensive. Being able to 3D print most of it from the moon dust will drop the cost down to a much more affordable amount as only a fraction of the materials needed to build it would have to be shipped from earth. Expect to see a moon-base on the moon in the next 5 to 10 years. This might also be a first step to mars as a moonbase would be a better launching and supply point for mars. If they can work out how to 3D print using martian materials then a 3D printer might also be the first thing sent to mars as part of a manned mission.

to everyone saying this is a bad idea because it would mess up the moons gravitation, read this. gravity = mass / radius^2. if we subtract all 15 million tons of helium 3 from the moons current mass we end up with a mass of 0.0994231599985 x 10^19 short tons. since removing so little material would undoubtedly not affect the radius of the moon we can keep that value the same then run our equation. once your done notice that the moons gravity went from 1.622 mps^2 to mps^2. basically to sum it up this change in mass will have no noticeable effects on the gravitation of the moon. its orbit will remain stable and our tides are safe. keep in mind if you want to calculate this yourself use natural units where the moons mass and radius = 1. and i know i didn't keep tack of my sigfigs, its just i needed the extra decimal places to show how small the difference actually is.
