Two ways to digitize old photos

By far one of the most common questions we get is, "What do I do with all my old photos?" Frankly, we've all got shoeboxes full of them too, so we went off in search of solutions that work whether you've got a small pile or a mountain to scan.

I use HP Scanjet G2710. It has negative scanner and a flatbed scanner. It has good restoration features. For example, I had some photos which were absolutely faded and after scanning, the colors were restored!

Great tips. I have started the process of transferring our old VHS's to DVD. Pictures are next. Blessings to you from Texas.

With computers so much faster now, and storage so much more affordable, scanning normal photos 5x7 or lower still makes sense at 600dpi minimum, and maybe more, because you can always save final edits as printable jpegs, but if years from now you decide you really wanted a larger print and realize your scan doesn't give enough resolution to enlarge, you will have to start all over, hope you still have a working scanner, which may not be supported by later versions of software (can you spell Silverfast and Windows, eh?). Saving a few seconds per scan now may be false economy later, and don't even get me started on the vanishing slide scanners of quality....

NEVER use an external hard drive for permanent storage, EVER! Reason is because hard drives fail and its not a matter of "if" but "when". Backing them up to a large USB stick that uses MLC memory or better bluray burnable media is cheap now. Optical is the best because its cheap and last forever. If a optical drive fails its not a big deal just buy another and pop in the bluray and your good to go, if a hard drive fails well your pictures are gone as well. Online services can be great but the issue is that your tied to a storage fee to store them and if you don't pay they get deleted, so too much effort and don't like my photos held for ransom (monthly fee).

What do you think about Google+ for backing your photos up?

Very helpful. Of course it's 2019 now, but the basic ideas were spot on. My kids were born before iPhones, so I have actual photos, . THOUSANDS of them. Methinks it's time to get them out of the dusty old bins and into the cloud. Now, about that organizing... eek!
