How long do you think you would make it in the world of The Last of Us? You going all the way, or do you get eaten day one?

I kept screaming at the TV for Sarah to take her ass back in the house and lock the doors. That entire scene was so tense and the old lady was creepy. When the dog runs, you run.

It was crazy to see that lady who I think was pretty much catatonic just go full zombie. The fungus just told her brain to turn on again

The saddest part is that you can actually hear Runners sobbing or moaning while idle in the game, showing that they still exist in their minds and are forced to watch as they devour their friends and loved ones.

The spores don't make much sense. Even if you wear a gas mask, the spores would get attached to your clothes, skin and hair and you could inhale them after taking the mask off. Also what if you have cuts/wounds, one little spore gets in there and you're done. That always bugged me.

I think an aspect that may be overlooked that adds to the horror is the fact that the host doesn't necessarily die once the fungus takes over their body. Since the fungus halts the decay of the tissue by replacing it with its own, the brain is essentially left alive but disconnected. Unless the brain is killed by either the invading fungus destroying it or cutting off the blood supply for its own nutrient gain, the victim could be alive and aware but completely unable to control their body.

In the pilot, you did see several amputated people in the quarantine zone (next to a guy wearing a Gore and Lieberman shirt), so maybe amputation does work?

This version of zombie is more terrifying than anything the zombie genre has put out thus far. More than even TWD. most zombie TV shows and movies do not explain how. This one does, and is a currently known form of fungus. It makes me wonder what, as our ice melts due to your warming climate, kind of virus's or fungi have been laying dormant for tens of thousands of years...another thing zombie movies and shows do not explain is how fast society falls. We are just supposed to believe it. This one does...it is in our food supply, just like the fungus that is theorized to explain the salem witch trials. With how food is internationally shipped, exported and imported, it does provide an explanation as to why it spread so quickly and also why our governments were so ill equipped to handle it. Most people were infected via food before the problem was even a known problem. Like I said...absolutely terrifying.

In the game's lore, the infected crops came from south America. Mostly chocolate and coffee. So you could see how quickly it was able to spread world wide.

There is another stage, we're the fungus decides the body is no longer useful and kills them in a suitable spot to grow and spread spores. Similar to the strain of cordyceps that infected ants.

1:22 Thank you for calling it fungus. So many YouTubers say virus which is a such a small detail but means a world of difference.

in 2012 I went to china and saw they were selling cordyceps fungus to eat as herbal medicine. It was quite commonly used in traditional chinese medicine for all sorts of ailments, highly prized, very expensive and I think the highest quality ones were from tibetian highlands. It comes with a very interesting sales pitch and story that is imbued into the name of the medicine: "冬虫夏草" which literally translates to "Winter insect Summer Grass". The transformational effect of the fungus is its main selling point as though it was magical. Has been used for hundreds, possibly thousands of years.

in the first episode i loved it when ellie said "is there really super infected that shoot spores at you"...i really hope HBO give us a bloater by the end of the season, it will be terrifying!!!

The reason joel and Sarah didnt get infected is becuase they avoided flour as the fungus infected the flour think about it they didnt eat any of the flower based foods at the start for example the biscuits and if the heat killed the fungus still it would have been from them inhaling it so since they stayed away that's how they survived

As much as the scenario is engaging and gruesome, I think they overblown the speed and effects of the disease. There's no disease in existence that spreads this fast. Most take days or even weeks to show first symptoms, let alone peak.

You forgot to cover a part where the infected host just grows straight into a wall when the host is dying, so it can spread more cordyceps spores, but since spores are no longer a source of infection in this show and we still see an infected corpse grown into a wall in the first episode, I'm curious why they still do it

So far the show has been excellent.
Its nice to see how it began instead of characters just talking about it. Episode 2 was on point!

Interestingly the Last of Us wasn't the first to explore a fungus that creates zombie mushroom-men. The British show Primeval in the episode 5 of its third season (aired April 2011) had a infectious fungus that traveled from the distant future through a time anomaly.
That show also had a future evolution of bat called the future predator (very imaginive name) that some believe is copied by the Quiet Place for their monsters since they're very similar.

First form Runners then to stalkers then to clickers then older infected either half mutated become shamblers or full blown bloaters and finally the rat king which is considered patient zero for all cities which declared a ground zero.

If this Ever came to fruition in the real world I don't know what I do except crawl under my bed to know that this could actually happen but the mutation of cordyceps has to suddenly develop over time scares the shit out of me
