Sigma Origin Story | Overwatch is here! We're introduced to Sigma - an eccentric astrophysicist who hopes to unlock the secrets of the universe, unaware that he is being used as a living weapon by TALON, none the less! Here's my lore analysis!

Sigma is here! We're introduced to a Dutch ex-scientist, now a Talon agent and living weapon!

In this video, I go through the trailer, analysing it point by point with reference to the teasers and what we know so far for Overwatch Lore :) There's some great little details!

Poor Sigma - clearly has a lot going on, and is an ill man :(

We still don't have a bio for Sigma on the site yet - what do you reckon will be the missing details? I reckon we'll get him on PTR tomorrow, and a website page too!

The Sigma Origin Story has arrived! We don't have all the answers yet - but, we know a lot about how Sigma came to be who he is - unaware that he's a Talon Living Weapon!

Sigma seems so sad. He's being forced and puppetted by Talon after a mistake made trying to understand the fundamentals of the universe. I hope that he can be saved in the lore.

As a Dutch person I can say that Sigma has a slight Dutch accent. However when he screams "What is this Melody?" his accent is far more clear.

Also, the Yellow letters at the beginning of the vid, spell out "Bevrijd me" which is Dutch for "Free me"

So yeah, it's save to assume Sigma is Dutch.

The last line after he says “hold it together, hold it together...” is “Release me!” when you play it backwards

When he is laying in bed he holds his hands like a mudra, mudras represent the connection of body and spirit in various ways depending on the hand gesture. The one he is doing is the most common one, touching thumb to index which can represent the connection of space and air or the connection of self to a higher power.

I for sure feel a heavy theme of split personalities or split mind or presence with this hero, multiple shots where there are doubles of him, and the recurring line of “Hold it together” like he’s trying to keep these personalities in check. You can also see it through the dialogue and how his tone changes, one scene he’s a determined scientist, the next he’s a frail, damaged old man, the the next he’s emotionless and obsessed with violence and power. Very interesting.

Edit: There’s also the reversed line of “Release me” at the end, perhaps one of his forms that doesn’t wish to be with talon

too put in a nutshell: here we have a dude who made a major discovery but it damaged him, and talon took advantaged of him when he's mentally unstable, broke in and turned him into a weaponnized puppet.

The orbs really look like dyson spheres, a conceptual construct designed to harness the energy of stars.

at 9:30 he says something after "its too much to hold on too" in reverse. BOYS. GET ON IT.


also idk if its a point worth making, but after talon breaks him out, he seems to calm down and come to a conclusion, as if something has "Grounded him". albeit not perfectly. with his words "its all an illusion, and the melody plays for ME" tbh, i think talon(maybe moira) anchored his mind, and hes a "weapon" to talon to repay them.

This hero has me HYPED. He reminds me of the Marvel Comics villain Graviton, very very similar backstory honestly. Is that a bad thing? ABSOLUTELY NOT. He does also remind me of Magneto, but he's more Graviton. This guy is definitely my new main.

I think that finger twitch in the jumpsuit scene 6:43 is him trying to write down equations; that's strengthened by the equations floating around him them; and the later image of him in his lab, but in that catatonic state 8:53.




From my high school understanding of relativity, the concept of space-time is that is that the more you are moving through space, the less you're moving through time, and vice versa. Basically if you are accelerating a lot, time slows down and less time will pass for you then people who aren't. As you approach the speed of light, you could move from one spot to another in what seems like instantly; which is one way to explain Tracer.
The force of gravity is based on something's mass; the more matter something has, the stronger things are pulled towards it. Black Holes have the most mass of anything we understand, that's why everything is pulled towards it. The force equation is Force=Mass*Acceleration; this makes Mass and Acceleration inverse from each other (A=F/M & M=F/A).
So if something had a set force, and you increased it's acceleration some how; like putting them in an experimental super jet; as that acceleration increases to infinity, the mass would decrease to nothing. That's Tracer's incorporeal state she's in as she teleports.
But what if you increased your mass instead, and made your self immovable and have objects drawn to you like a black hole, or better yet. What if you could choose if you want the power to be infinitely fast and thus in multiple places at once, without the ability to interact; or the power to be immovable and obliterate anything near you. I think that's what Sigma will be.

the way sigma reacts to that music makes me think that when the experiment went wrong he saw more than he should have outside of his reality; it would be fun to maybe hear sigma acknowledge the game music

I find that his character reminds me a lot of how John Forbes Nash Jr was portrayed in A Beautiful Mind.

He suffered with schizophrenia, which caused him to be paranoid and hallucinate visually and audibly. Some people said that the pressures of his work worsened his mental health.

I think when it shows Sigma as multiple copies, it demonstrates that his mind is split. He's shown as a scientist, a prisoner and his final talon form. Additionally, he has three different voice performances that go along with his different versions. That's also why the pen and other props reappear as though its multiple timelines - I think he's mixing fragments of his life. He hallucinates the melody too.

Talon, especially with Moira as a medical professional, would be able to manipulate easily and perhaps that's even what his head armor is.

(And probably more because you thought it was scary at first but playing it backwards gives it more of a punch.)

he is wearing blue and white like overwatch did in the past, maybe he was working for them, hence being n space like Winston. and something went wrong as he was working off duty on the black hole tech for overwatch. Maybe it's how they made the tech for tracer's plane. He might've continued to experiment after the tracer incident, and had the accident that changed him?

As a dutchy, I must say that his accent is pretty flawless.
I did not catch on to it untill my 3rd rewatch and even at that point I wasn't even sure if it was Dutch or just a general English regional accent.
After hearing about his nationality I was able to pick out a few things such as short S's and harsh T's.

You missed something quite big! The hero is Dutch! At the beginning if you slow the video down you can read in yellow letters (By the Sigma Origin story) "e m d j i r v e B" Which turned around means: "B e v r i j d m e"
Which means "Release me" in Dutch :)

I am Dutch and I am beyond hyped! I've been waiting for a Dutch hero for ages and the result seems even better than I hoped.
Being Dutch, yes I definitely agree you can hear a slight Dutch accent
