As someone working in publishing, we would sign any previously self-published writer with an audience. The only thing that matters is money.

I don't think authortube itself is the problem. Everyone youtube or social media community has its share of scammers just looking to capitalize on it. But good for you for calling it out;!!

This kind of discussion is necessary at times to make everybody aware of what’s genuine and what’s not. I love your honesty.

Anyone interested in writing their own books, please just Google plot structures and outlines. They are there, and they are free. The people making big money self-publishing either got lucky, or they publish frequently. And they also usually have a spouse that works a normal job so that they can afford to stay home and type until it turns a profit. :-P Once you have enough out there, you *can* see a profit, but you have to basically do everything yourself and spend only on essentials, like cover art, etc., which is how I did it. The goal is essentially to generate passive income from digital sales of your books. It's do-able, but certainly an uphill battle.

I always side-eye the community when they charge for content you can find on google for free.

Getting caught up on your videos today. If you're going to take an online class, the masterclasses are very reasonable. I took James Patterson's and it was very useful. He may not be everyone's favorite author, but at least he's a proven success.

This is great for creators to hear this and be aware.

I wasn’t even aware of things like this happening with authors. Sounds awful.

I remember when a “friend” of mine who hadn’t spoken to me in a long time reached out to me about what I was doing with my photography and youtube. Said he liked what I was doing and wanted to help me out. I agreed.

We met up almost every week at least once for a month and change. Talked about my plans and his plans for his own company etc etc.

Then, came the pitch.
The MLM pitch.

To meet a mentor and buy a book to read so the mentor can ask me questions and eventually I’d have to pay for something like the Mentor’s products. Etc. in short, I cut off all ties with this person immediately before I ever agreed to meet his Mentor.

It’s always good to have a heads up with things like this so I’m glad you spoke up.

People also need to be aware of predatory editors. They are out there and they will try to tell only they can provide x, y, and z to clean your book up and make it perfect. It’s important to shop around, see who’s out there, and if other people recommend their services.

Great video and thank you for warning all the aspiring writers. I am not even surprised this is happening in the community as there are sharks in almost all industries - especially on YouTube I have to say because those people are just using their victims desperation to make money out of them. Personally I have painfully learned my lessons as a consumer of self-help and new age b***s*** for years and I am glad to say that I am on the other side today but can totally understand how desperation make someone fall for these con artists - particularly in the new age community where things become quite cult-y very quickly. But I digress. Very good video.

There's so much free information on Youtube and elsewhere if you need help/guidance on writing. I rather like Michelle Schusterman who is a traditionally published middle-grade author in the authortube space. Great discussion!

Authortube, like many mlm's or influencers, aren't selling books so much as a lifestyle. You can be the shittiest writer there is, and as long as you have a decent youtube following, a 'brand', and the right networking, it's easier to achieve that lifestyle than try to get accepted by an agent.
I watched a lot of Kristen Martin and looked into her 'conferences' with agents. It doesn't sound like anyone wanted to take her, but instead of working more on her writing, she self published and then STILL ignored her readers telling her they weren't up to par, instead pushing forward fake reviews to sell more. (Allegedly)
Considered doing an expose, but another part of me has more important shit to address on my channel than one person's dirt.

I think writing and improving one's writing in any specific category of writing seems to be about consciously and subconsciously sublimating good writers of that category, and enough of such writers are free to read online. But when it comes to what makes a good writer, one has to be looking at merit like they are a level-headed person from the 1990's.

Initially I liked Kristen Martin advice, a long while ago, then she started putting out exclusive content for things I would never be able to afford. It felt alienating and really put me off. Then I read her book, or started on off kindle and well, I wasn’t super impressed with the writing. And never finished it.

I agree and disagree. I got a publishing contract after being self published for years (for a different book though). There are infinite combinations of how publishing works, and to reduce it to the traditional vs. Self pub binary does nothing but exclude small businesses

I think, mathematically, the landscape is approaching an inflection point. We might not get the fast (unsustainable) income streams, but there is a way to make a living here. We probably need to invest in frequent self aware self evaluation to get there but the algorithm to make it does not exist yet. When we get to the other side of the inflection point we can go either upward at an accelerated rate or downward.
There is a level of healing through art therapy that gets depreciated for whatever reason. 2 weekends ago there was the celebration of 24 hour comic day. Scott McCloud started that challenge Long before NaNoWriMo, and yet people don't use it to sell courses to the level of NaNoWriMo or inktober.

I highly recommend Sara Cannon’s videos to anyone who writes and especially anyone into indie publishing. She gives away an absolutely massive amount of free info, and she’s actually sold an insane amount of books (and written I think over 25 of them).

But I agree about how predatory courses can Especially from people who don't actually put out books for the most part. YES that part takes the pyramid structure
