Koyaanisqatsi, also known as Koyaanisqatsi: Life out of Balance, is a 1982 film directed by Godfrey Reggio with music composed by Philip Glass and cinematography by Ron Fricke. The film consists primarily of slow motion and time-lapse photography of cities and many natural landscapes across the United States. The visual tone poem contains neither dialogue nor a vocalized narration: its tone is set by the juxtaposition of images and music. In the Hopi language, the word Koyaanisqatsi means 'crazy life, life in turmoil, life out of balance, life disintegrating, a state of life that calls for another way of living', and the film implies that modern humanity is living in such a way. The film is the first in the Qatsi trilogy of films: it is followed by Powaqqatsi (1988) and Naqoyqatsi (2002). The trilogy depicts different aspects of the relationship between humans, nature, and technology. Koyaanisqatsi is the best known of the trilogy and is considered a cult film.

Found this movie years ago while channel surfing. It was at about this point in the movie, with the Microdata office. In those days before digital whenever I channel surfed I watched until I could figure out what the show/film was about before deciding whether to move on. So I was wondering what the scene was building up to, with the music clearly something dramatic was about to happen. By the time you realise there's no story, it has already captivated you.

This film is so revolutionary and poignant that it blew me away when I saw it the first time some forthy years ago. I saw it in a large cinema, and the film's message is totally heartbreaking. Now I am old and dying but the evocative, but also threatening imagery of this film, lingers on in me.

The ambient/drone soundscapes on this score do not get enough credit.

Seriously, so ahead of it’s time.

But I also love to see human potential being used. To see all of those roadways flowing with traffic just as they we're designed. And now all of those people can get to where they need to go. Trains are also amazing.

5:34 Some of my oldest memories are of that pale green light that came from mercury vapour streetlights in cities at night.

The city is like a biological, living being. The lights coursing through its veins like blood.

When watching "The Grid", I feel as if I am under sensory assault, but that is not unlike living day-to-day life in a big, overly-developed metropolitan area, so I am rather used to it! Koyaanisqatsi is one of my five favorite films ever.
