Koyaanisqatsi, also known as Koyaanisqatsi: Life out of Balance, is a 1982 film directed by Godfrey Reggio with music composed by Philip Glass and cinematography by Ron Fricke. The film consists primarily of slow motion and time-lapse photography of cities and many natural landscapes across the United States. The visual tone poem contains neither dialogue nor a vocalized narration: its tone is set by the juxtaposition of images and music. In the Hopi language, the word Koyaanisqatsi means 'crazy life, life in turmoil, life out of balance, life disintegrating, a state of life that calls for another way of living', and the film implies that modern humanity is living in such a way. The film is the first in the Qatsi trilogy of films: it is followed by Powaqqatsi (1988) and Naqoyqatsi (2002). The trilogy depicts different aspects of the relationship between humans, nature, and technology. Koyaanisqatsi is the best known of the trilogy and is considered a cult film.

Saw them do this at the Hollywood Bowl about 9 years ago. Live with the film and Phillip Glass with his ensemble. Unreal. There was a full moon. Orchestra and choir. !!!

I sat through the whole film around the age of 4 in the mid-80's and was truly mesmerised, haunted by the cinematography and the score. I find the film saddening but I'm compelled to watch it.

The subtitle on this movie is "life out of balance". Life is WAY more out of balance than it was in 82! If Godfrey remade this movie today, it would be much more harrowing and WAY different.

its great to leave this on at a party, good background images and it gets all the philosophy stoners in one spot so you dont have to start talking Schopenhauer while you're trying to play beer pong

I've just watched the first 2 parts of this films and I already know that by the end of it, I will consider it one of my favorites of all time. Truly hipnotizing.

Even if I can see this film here splitted in several parts and with three parts missing for free, I will definitely buy the trilogy again, also to honor these great artists. I learnt about this magnific movie thanks to my brother in the 90th. If it wasn´t for him, I would have had a much more boring/simple life. Since then we were both always looking for new artworks to fulfill our lives.

I don't understand why the next 2 parts are blocked in the US. The world makes no sense... Rather appropriate.

Ron Frike filmed two other equally stunning silent documentaries-- Baraka and Samsara. Worth seeing in IMAX if they're ever shown that way again.

this film requires the viewer to participate with the experience making it something sort of a co creative effort for the participant to make his own conclusions. that is the beauty of it, the story is limitless to the imagination and it does not require the confining restraints of a plot whatsoever.

The best scene IMO. The transition from awe of Nature to our Domination over it.

After watching this masterpiece countless times, I've come to the realizatio that man couldn't destroy the environment even if he wanted.
