Turner Syndrome 101

Welcome to our first crash courses session on sex chromosome abnormalities: Turner Syndrome 101. In this video we will be introducing topics and terms such as meiosis, chromosomes, and non-disjunction. This video will explore how non-disjunction during meiosis can give rise to a variety of disorders including Turner Syndrome. We will be discussing prevalence symptoms, treatment of Turner Syndrome.

I was diagnosed with Turner Syndrome at 15 years old. I was so upset that growth hormone wasn’t an option for me. They said that while I was physically still 12, my bones had still started to fuse. I won’t likely get taller than 4’10”. I wasn’t quite able to understand at first. This was really helpful in explaining in more detail what’s happened to my body! Thank you! 🤗😅

Thanks. I don’t see much Turner syndrome stuff on my fyp! I currently take growth hormones! We’ve known I’ve had it since birth and I might not get any taller then an inch over a kindergartner! I hope this changes! I really love that there are videos spreading awareness about this!

Most females with Turner Syndrome (about 99%) pass away in utero. My daughter Alaina is one of these girls who never made it to birth. RIP Alaina and all the other little ones who didn't make it.

Is it possible to have partial/mosaic Turner where you develop breasts and have menstruation (though a VERY light one), but have pretty much every single other symptom? I was never diagnosed but after researching it it's pretty uncanny how even the less talked about symptoms (overformation of keloids, differently shaped palate, neurodivergence, short chubby fingers etc) apply to me. Only having breasts & menstruation makes me think it's probably not it. I just want to know if there is a possibility before I actually get some genetic testing done because unfortunately I am not in the position to do so at the moment for personal reasons, but I definitely feel like I should possibly look into it.

This video is so helpful but at 1:15 it would be far more expedient to say “variation happens” instead of “sometimes mistakes occur” in describing sex abnormalities. Medically, these are a result of variation in reproduction and not a mistake. The terminology is important; see pronouns use.

Those fortunate to live with any chromosome poly or aneuploidy (since many do not survive gestation or infancy) are not mistakes, but valuable variations of the human condition and treasured members of society.
