I used to play a game with myself where I imagined Oprah (or my mother-in-law) might suddenly show up on my doorstep and demand to be let in for tea. That really helped me clean and declutter!

I did the original minimalist game in November 2019 and completed it plus a few extra items. I removed over 500 items from my home. I asked my husband if he noticed anything different about the house at the end of the month and he said no!

Loved this one Sarah!! The partner decluttering challenge sounds amazing by the way. I’ve never heard of it before, but definitely want to try it out now! 💙

One thing I tried was a variation on a "packing party" also from the Minimalists. Ryan from the Minimalists packed his whole house as if he was moving and only removed items as he needed them - then decluttered the boxed items he didn't need after a period of time. I did this with my bathroom when I remodeled. When the job was done, I only took out items as I used them, making it easy to identify and discard unneeded items.

Thank you Sarah for this video! I have just realized that I am doing the idea number 2 - decluttering by number :) In November, last year I was decluttering 12 items in one day and that was ok. In December I decided to declutter 30 items in one day and that was too much so I gave up. In January I picked a number 25 and it was also too much, so there were successful days and days when I didn't manage to do my decluttering homework. Now in February I am decluttering 7 items every day and it is very nice. I am picking up one room each day - the kitchen, the dining room, the bathroom and the bedroom. So every fourth day I am in the same room. Today I take away over 50 clothes items in H&M and my family members were also included in that action. They have just started to notice my decluttering work and I am happy for that. We have a large apartment which is overcrowded by things. We even don't know what we have. The living room and my son's room are the most clean areas, so I leave that for the next step, but the entrance hall and storage room are overcrowded so I decided to do it in the very end of decluttering mission.

When I clean the house I remove one item from each room. Sometimes more but at least one. This is my declutter maintenance “game” . Definitely not overwhelming and very satisfying to continually lighten the stuff.

I think the timed suggestion can also be looked at the opposite way....if you are dreading doing a certain spot then pick a certain time that you work on it that day and unless you want to go past the time...the timer gives you and out.

Hi Sarah these were some great ideas. We recently purchased an iron and a sweeper because the other ones were broken. 1 in 1 out method. Thank you for another great video. We hope Jake and you have a good week.❤

Hi Sarah. These are excellent tips. I like the minimal counting game but I came up with finding 4 items a day. That way it wasn’t stressful and not as time consuming.

I will tell you AGAIN...the most effective way to declutter is to have a box & every time I run across something I think I want to get rid of, when the box is full I go through & establish "where" each item should go...ie. Goodwill, someone I know that can use it, trash! It works so good for me! You are a great inspiration!!!! Thank you!!!!

My last declutter was a couple weeks ago in my bathroom. Since I'm in the maintenance phase now, I found a couple items that I no longer found value from, plus I did some rearranging. Now my counter top only has the essentials on it as well as a couple decor pieces. Great video as always, Sarah! :)

I have made a list of 24 different types of things I own. And my plan is in the months of April and May to work my way through on 8 consecutive weekends I will get through three of the i Topix and on the last weekend of May I will haul everything to charity or discard in some manner. I normally do a declutter in May and then another one in September. but I decided to make it a little more organized and spread out into smaller tasks so it's not so overwhelming. I'm also hoping to take some things out of the house more frequently but the last weekend will be the final removal of everything. my list of 24 things are based upon specific areas that I know I have an abundance of or areas of my apartment that I think are cluttered. For example the drawers in the nightstand. Also spices exercise stuff shoes. DVDs books clothes. (I really don't have very many clothes to get rid of so that is a small item.) I prefer to do my de-cluttering in the spring and the fall. typically in the winter it is really icy and nasty to haul things back and forth to my car. And I really like decluttering in the fall getting ready for the holidays. Last fall I got rid of all my Christmas decorations except for one small box.

The partner game would never work for me, I’d feel way too judged. Lol. I’d rather find the items and make the decision on my own to avoid resentment.

The real difficulty for me is actually not the decluttering part but to choose to not go to a thrift store for no reason...😆 Keeps me away from having to start all over again. Thanks for your video and the tips for decluttering with other people!!!☺️

I am trying not to acquire more stuff and or clothing at the moment. Its difficult, i was on a weekend away with friends and my friends bought several things and encouraged me and eachother to buy stuff. Its such a habit to go shopping together. I felt a bit lonely with my minimalist resolutions.

Hi, Sarah! Quick question. My husband and I both have old tests, homework, Valentine's cards, etc that our parents kept for us all the way back from elementary school. While I see these as precious treasures, we also never look at them and they stay in a box. How should we go about decluttering these items?
