In this video I’m unboxing and using this rockler 3/8 dowel jig. Never used one before and seams to be an easy tool to use and for $ 22 you can’t go wrong.

The best review, love it when you discover what went wrong, and how to fix it. Thanks much.

I always had my doubts about squeeze/trigger clamps and particularly the ones from Harbor Freight. But I tried a couple and actually think they are pretty good. I use them much more than I thought I would.

One thing I’ve found really helpful with these jigs is to glue a few strips of 100-120 grit sand paper to the bottom of the acrylic clamping surface so it grips to the wood. Then there’s no need to clamp to hard and it doesn’t budge.

Great review, sir. I honestly found this very interesting. I gave up on dowels many years ago because I could never get thing to line up. I have seen this jig but I wondered how well it actually worked. I suspected people had to do some planing after using it but it sounds like it is legit! I like the tips about sharpening the pencil and using the squeeze clamp.

The new version of the jig by Rockler is even easier and better.

I have a Powertec on the way from Amazon. It looks like a knock off of the Rockler. You awesome video well help me with a quick start in using it so thank you. I tried the HB clamps with no luck and have went over to the Irwin and have been pretty satisfied.

It would be nice to have an adjustable side piece like you see on Circular saws it would make quick work of it when doing multiple pieces.

The Rockler dowel jig is similar in design to the Kreg pocket hole jig, which I see you have in the background.

That is a great jig. Is there a chip port on those jigs or does it all come out the drill bit holes?

I had bad luck with the jig. It didn’t line up exactly. I tried it several times and couldn’t get it to work. I returned it to the Rockler store and got another one and that one was also not accurate.

These doweling jigs are pure garbage!! The problem is that the body of the jig provides the drill bit to much play, causing proud edges and misalignment. It takes way to long to set up and continually lets you down. I have one collecting dust in my shop... before you waste you purchase one, let me know and I will gladly give you mine to keep someone else from wasting money on it!!!
