In 1956, an ageing butler goes on a road trip through the English countryside while reflecting on his life past and present. This Booker prize winning novel with barely a plot quickly became one of my favourite ever reads of recent years.

Thanks to your descriptive recommendation, I read this lovely, lovely book yesterday and was utterly absorbed by it. This is now the best historical novel I've read this year, if not several years. Loved the beautiful narrative and atmosphere. Your channel has really nudged me into exploration beyond my beloved Classics and literary fiction.

It’s funny, from the way you describe the book I wouldn’t think it would be something I would go for because I love plots where things actually happen. But luckily I have already read it and agree that it’s beautiful and moving, and I actually read it rather quickly. Goes to show that sometimes it’s good to read things one would normally ignore from the description alone.

Oh I love love love this book! Such stunningly perfect prose, and the FEELINGS! The emotions! subtly and superbly executed. I was actually shocked at how much I enjoyed it and I often think of doing a re-read to savor the beauty of the writing. ALSO, love your shirt!

One of my favorite books; and you did a amazing job at describing why it's so beautiful.

Another 20th Century favorite that I share with you :) I need to reread but I remember how beautiful and full of melancholy the story is. Stevens is a fascinating character. It is one of those perfect books, nothing could have been improved.

I read “The Remains of the Day” a couple of years ago and also really enjoyed it. You describe it perfectly here. A few years down the line I don’t remember much of the story but I do have a strong memory of the tone of the novel and of the character of the butler.

I've just finished reading it. I passed half of the time finding the book very boring, without to putting it aside (as I do sometimes). And then the third final part of it shaked me and made me curious... observing the historical context, first (I was shocked)... and then I loved and loved the book by the end of it, and it adjusted my perspective to the purpose of the whole book. I started to feel where it was going, but was unsure... I noticed this greatly unreliable narrator in front of me trying to make sense of his past and his present. It is heartbreaking and beautifully written.

Before your video this book hadn't appealed to me...but clearly had the wrong impression of the book altogether. Character studies are amongst the most arresting and gratifying in my opinion...sounds right up my alley! Requested a library copy today. Thank you!

Your accent is amazing (I'm from across the pond).

Have you read Ishiguro's new novel? It's almost as good as this one.

Thank you, you've persuaded me to give this book a try! I've always resisted it before, because domestic workers in a country manor sounds too much like Downton Abbey. I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts on "The Buried Giant" by the same author.

I have not read this book yet but I have seen the play. It was well done and very emotional but I felt quite miserable at the end.
