I'd rather see a couple bad guys slip through on technicality reasons than have a system that allows innocents to be susceptible to some cop dropping in incriminating evidence. These two perps sound like scumbags. But, imperfect systems have to err to the side of presumed innocence!

When a car is towed, the owner should be able to decline the “inventory” search and release the police of any liability for the contents.

Evidence from these searches is usually very easily excluded. There is never any documentation logging the "inventory". And they won't be able to present anyone or anything that suggests they are anything but the unlawful searches that they are.

If the real reason for an inventory search was to protect the vehicle owner’s property than anything found would be inadmissible. The fact that it is not means that excuse is BS.

We never hear enough about the extreme inconvenience caused by improper arrests, searches & towing, ESPECIALLY when charges have been dropped because the citizen could afford a really good lawyer. What did all that cost the citizen, and was there any compensation?
