To be fair, even if Mason isn't dead, nobody in universe would know that. Mason didn't come out of hiding til 2025 when Menendez was finally dealt with.

Well I think they meant that he's "dead" in the sense that where the game takes place, he's essentially dead as he doesn't reveal himself to be alive until 2025. Or I just have wishful thinking...
