Trump tariffs: What will the impact be on Canadians' wallets?

Since his election in November, Canadian officials have been largely focused on U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to impose sweeping 25 per cent tariffs on all goods from Canada and Mexico.

But experts warn Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on imports from China could send shockwaves through global supply chains – resulting in higher prices on everything from big-ticket households to dollar store purchases.

Regardless if this actually causes cost increase, many greedy grocery chains and department stores will falsely make such claims and use them to increase prices. We should look out for these type of scams.

Shop locally, Canadian stores, quite shopping at Walmart, Costco., Amazon. Support your farmer markets. Geez people we didn’t have these stores before and we damn well survived just fine .

This could be the best medicine for Canada. We need to developers our own secondary industries and produce our own goods. For far too long resources have gone down to states and come back as finished products. What good is that to Canadians and our economy? This why the tariffs will never materialize, they are more potent as a threat. Wait until Feb 2 for him to delay and if he does do it, time to start a business producing some of those products in Canada that are getting tariff going and coming from the states.

US tariffs on Canada won't raise prices for Canadians, it will raise prices for US consumers but some Canadians may lose their job. On the other hand if Canada imposes counter tariffs on US goods it will raise prices for Canadian consumers.

USA pays the the tariffs on Canadian imports. My household will be fine, corporations may lose some American sales but its going to hurt the American consumer more than anyone else. Maybe we could stop propping up the American auto industry by dropping our own tariffs on affordable foreign vehicles.

When I go to the grocery store, I notice than beef and all kinds of foods from around the corner are more expensive than far away exports. If local businesses want to get those market shares, they can... I won't hold my breath.
