Whipping A Rope - Repairing & Stopping Fraying

I had to repair one of my horse ropes and decided to show how to apply whipping to a rope to stop fraying. I use para cord but any small strong rope can be used. NOTE: MY TWITTER IS @Horsyguy

I remember this kind of whipping. At school we girls had lessons in needlework; we learnt to knit, crochet, sew, stitch. And we learnt macramé by making a belt and a hanging basket for flowers. We learnt different knots and whipping a tassel.
The boys had no lessons, they could go home two hours early than we girls. Can you imagine this today? Girls would scream "That's sexist!" You know what? I'm glad I learnt these skills. :-)

Well damn, good ole Rick was a Rappel Master!! You never cease to amaze me. Reminds me of going through The Air Assault School at Ft. Campbell Ky. That was a fun experience, even though I was hung over most days!!!

I have not tried this method of finishing ends yet. So far I am quite pleased with hot knifing the ends, putting on heat shrink tubing (inch or so), then heat shrinking the tubing with matches. Looks very nice.

My father taught me how to do this and I had forgotten. Thanks for the refresher!

Nice work !

I've got several wrapped canes around with fancy 550 cord wrapping techniques of various styles. I've tugged my share ah maybe that didn't come out right

As for Buddy they say horses are a reflection of their owner so strong headed pain in the a$$ sounds about right. But don't tell him I said so cuz you likely won't be able to get his head through a barn doorway afterward.

We cut bungee cord and braided rope often, using a hot knife. Clean cut melted together. I do like that knot as extra security though.

Not related to a knot. Fraid knot, but that loco horse buddy shows up in a dream I had last night!!! Better check your gates Rick!
And he was a good boy so you better not go

I should of added that I always enjoy your knot lessons! I havent tied a good knot since the boyscouts, and if I dont use them, I forget them. I ought to buy some rope and practice a few of the ones you've demonstrated in your videos. Could come in handy any time!
In a case of a breakin one for the hands and one for the neck!

I do that to all my lines on my sailboat. Best way to stop fraying of line/rope there is when it's done right.

It works great. I've done this a few times.

Whipping is for natural fiber rope. Fusing is for synthetic rope. Knowing the difference: priceless.

This was in my dad's boy scout handbook and in mine. I have to wonder if it is in the scout handbooks they sell today. (Less the burning part, obviously with the string/twine/rope we used back then it didn't slip).

Rick, Look up ( HOW TO SERVE A BOW STRING ) A good one on Y tube is, (  How to start & finish a bow string serving. ) It's made by-- Willie Pete. I use the same Technique for my Dobes. ropes but as you said, GONNA KNOCK THEIR TEETH OUT, LOL. It seems it's the first part they start chewing on, freggin Doberman's but without them I WOULD BE LOST.

All the rest of the video's close caption was just fine.

Something is up.

'Whipping with rick G'…
Channel heading in a new direction…
You can also use a hot knife to cut it, or small butane torch to cure the end…

Should’ve went 13 wraps around, not 5 or 6.
😉😉

Why not just cut The Fray off. And melt it with a lighter?

ahh man. Get a butane torch and a nice thick welders glove, , , set that frayed end on fire and mash it together with your glove-fingers!
