Acclaimed fiddler and teacher Darol Anger expands on a very special category of musical improvisation: How to come up with variations on fiddle tunes without obliterating the character of the tune. Here he examines the classic "Billy In The Low Ground". For way, way more of this kind of thing, check his Artistworks Fiddle School:

I heard the story of how this song came to be the other day. Billy was out exploring the land, and he fell into some quicksand and luckily he had his fiddle so he began playing until someone heard the music and came to help him out.

Interesting, but it would be nice to hear the entire tune played a few times with different variations.
