David Zeiger on FTA

In 1972, Jane Fonda—the Silent Majority’s primary bête noire—and Donald Sutherland organized a traveling comedy show as an anti-war alternative to the distinctly establishment vibe of Bob Hope’s USO tours. Filmmaker Francine Parker directed this low budget documentary featuring some remarkably unfunny skits and some compelling behind the scenes interviews.

As always, you can find more commentary, more reviews, more podcasts, and more deep-dives into the films you don't know you love yet over at the Trailers From Hell mothership:

But wait! There's more! TFH has a podcast!

It's THE MOVIES THAT MADE ME, where you can join Oscar-nominated screenwriter Josh Olson and Trailers From Hell Fearless Leader Joe Dante in conversation with filmmakers, comedians, and all-around interesting people about the movies that made them who they are. Check it out now, and please subscribe wherever podcasts can be found.

Thanks so much for this.

Having lived & worked in Ha Noi for the last 25+ years i must say that tributes to Jane are all over Viet Nam as are tributes to the brave & wonderful American Veterans against the war.

I've worked mainly in Tourism in Viet Nam but I've also got a cafe that runs aside & with my tour operator gig.

My Magical History Tour is our 1 day city tour & it's the best one in town even if I do say so myself.

A few years ago & in the centre of the old Gaol, called the Ha Noi Hilton by American POW's opened a fitting tribute to the anti war protesters from all around the world & the Comrades express their respect & gratitude in a big way.

It's really well done too & every time I take people on our City Tour it affects me deeply.

Like my Vietnamese family, friends & country men & women, I too have enormous respect for all the American activists who really did make a huge difference & saved countless lives, possibly millions of Vietnamese & Americans alike.

Thanks from the bottom of my "Hart" now & forever.

I can't thank you enough for putting the dvd release of FTA together. My dad was very, very active in the anti-war movement, so being able to watch it together is a memory I'll treasure for the rest of my life.

That's amazing. A great commentary on a film most of us know so little about. I saw Klute as a young boy in San Francisco with my parents. I don't recall if they knew about FTA, or if they wanted to see it, but I would have gone.

I had this movie on a bootleg DVD for years. It looked like it was sourced from a workprint that was copied to VHS about 10 times. So it was bad. I'm really happy it's finally being cleaned up and released. Thank you.

Thank you! Ike; Beware the military industrial complex... always has been true, probably for most of the future as well. Just be clear where you stand when the next Bob Hope tour comes thru your internet connection.... IMHO
