I started running XP VMs at work a number of years ago to keep legacy PCI data acquisition cards going. There's an unofficial "SP4" out there that bypasses having to deal with the old XP updates being unavailable.

Silly question. Could you not run the OS on an external drive connected to a device online, but set the drive to read only to avoid potential viruses?

Tempted to use a 98...if only to see if I cant engineer the system into an entirely different development/evolutionary direction than Microsoft did by using modern knowledge.
