4k looks great in daylight, did some quick tests at night and it was ok isshhh as it was really dark and used it as a dashcam, i probaly need to try to fiddle with the iso settings to get better results. I really like this camera globally. The suction mount is unreliable. Movies in 1080p 60 fps are great under water. On firmare 21, there are several 2k 4k options now.

Did you ever use the Yi 4K or 4K+? It just smashes the SJ7 Star ....

You're one lucky gal to live near Bryce and Zion.
I've been to both, but that was clear back in 1982.
Yeah, I'd like to go back, especially to Zion.

Do you get any visual intrusion from the front gimbal motor in any of your video footage? Are you restricted to having to shoot in narrow frames?

I'm a big fan of the SJ7 Star too. It's a great little action cam. Have you seen the new SJCAM gimbal? It too is made to SJCAM's high quality standards and appears to be a very nice unit. I gave myself one for Christmas! Just found your channel and enjoy your product reviews and comments. I also agree with your assessment of Amazon Basic house brand. Simply good products at a fair price.

Hi, SnapChick. I really would have liked to watch some night footage, but this video was really great and your comments extremely helpful. I think I'm convinced...! :) Ready, set, go for adventure at San Miguel Island in Azores, Portugal!

Great Video and information about the SJ7 Star. Would you be able to tell me how much Megabytes or Gigabytes 1 hour of video uses for 1080P 120fps and 1080P 60fps?

Thanks and keep up the great videos.

I have now switched to the GoPro Hero 7 Black....My SJCAM SJ8 Pro broke within a couple of months of using it (shut off and wouldn't turn on at all). SJCAM told me to contact the seller which I did who offered to send me a new one...it never arrived. They supposedly sent a second (from Malaysia again) it never arrived again. Then the seller said they would refund me...never happened despite repeated promises. I contacted SJCAM to tell them I wanted to get a replacement and sent them video of the malfunction (like I did to the seller). They erased my help ticket like it never existed...I haven't heard back from them...I'm done with SJCAM...which is sad because I like the SJ7 STAR for cockpit audio when I fly. The only problem I've had with the two SJ7 STAR cameras is that the micro usb port has broken off in both cameras (I superglued a micro usb to usb cable on the second one before it totally broke off so I could keep using it in the plane while charging it at the same time with a USB power supply). The first SJ7 would not record sound after the micro usb port broke (while using the plug in official SJCAM microphone. The GoPro Hero 7 surpasses everything...that's all I'm saying..the only problem is that it's never going to be as cheap as SJCAM. I did all of my video reviewing with the SJ7 and SJ8 but they will be retired soon with GoPro cameras. The hypersmooth technology is what sold me and it is great. I do not have room in the plane to have a gyro.

UPDATE: They also took down my 2nd help ticket without anything said....DO NOT BUY SJCAM!!!!....or should we call it SCAM and make the J silent?

How's the low light on it? I have the new GoPro 6 and I feel like it's a joke and may sell it. This thing looks pretty darn good for the price, eh? -- You look amazing!! =]

I agree with Snap chick on the use of SJCam, I use SJCam 5000X's (3). The Overall Quality and Durability is Very good, including night video's & Video stabilization.. The Only problem is, if you live in extremely hot area, like Southern AZ{Summer Car Interior temps +190deg}, DO Not use as a Dash cam. if you insist on using as a Dash Cam REMOVE the Battery, the overheated battery will will expand & destroy the Camera..

Thanks for the excellent review. I am thinking of getting an action camera and after reading horrible Amazon review of GoPro cameras, my research led me to the SJ7. I have a question for you (below). But first, I see you're a photographer. I'm a photographer myself but I never jumped on digital photography (although I do informal work in digital). The reason I never jumped on digital is that I've been a large format film photographer for over 40 years. I shoot in 4x5" and 8x10" formats. I still love working that way and I still print in my darkroom. I'm one of the last dinosaurs! :-)

Anyway, I haven't done any video in quite a while and what I have done is with an old inexpensive digital video camera. My question is about video editing software. I'm new to this but I realized that I'll need video editing software to work with 4K video but all I have is the crappy Windows video editor (I work on a PC) and a basic introductory program that came with my PC that I've never used and I'm sure it won't work with 4K. Since I only want to do very basic editing and adding music, etc., I don't want to go with a pro level program. I need something very simple and basic and, hopefully, inexpensive. Could you recommend video editing software for Windowss that would meet my needs?

Thanks again.
