Don't do this

Don't get into the habit of lifting the clutch before you have set the gas. This can lead to stalling.

My instructor never taught me this, I picked the habit up from riding motorcycles. Tbh manual bike made everything in a car easier to learn.

It's basically impossible to move off at all without setting the gas in the Toyota Aygo that I used to drive, that thing would take any opportunity it could find to stall

My method is:
Select first gear and don’t sent the gas until you reach the bitting point.
As that’s when the vehicle needs the power.
If you set the gas early your going to slightly over rev the engine more then it requires.
Once a habit set in, very hard to
Get rid of.

Now when you’re learning to change gears you will be accelerating whilst lifting the clutch up.
( not good for the clutch)

If you’re learning in a manual car try to avoid learning in a diesel.
As the diesel car most of them don’t need the gas to be set at the beginning.
If you then drive a petrol car which most do, you’ll have issues with stalling a lot.

Yep, it's true. I was taught this method and didn't think anything of it until I decided to also learn in my mum's (petrol) car for my second driving test...I kept stalling in her car when moving off this way; it knocked my confidence down temporarily because I literally had to start from scratch i.e. drive in quiet areas just to practice moving off. All is well now though!

this is perfect for cars with low power. Something with a high power usually tends to push ahead with the release of clutch only. Love those cars that do that.

Time and a place for both when I'm pulling away off my drive into a 10mph road I'm not setting the gas when I'm following a massive line of traffic I'm not setting the gas when I'm on a hill or close to a junction I'll set the gas it's nothing to worry about if you do this you do what suits you best

I think my instructor wants me to do this, but hasn't corrected me because by releasing the clutch super gently and slowly I never stalled. Then I wondered "how do other people move off so smoothly and quickly compared to me?". This was the reason.

It took practicing hill starts to understand that you need a bit of power to move off smoothly.

I learnt on a diesel where you could feel the biting point very easily and this was definitely the case. When I got my first car she happened to be a petrol and would stall a lot more easily. I had to learn this lesson very quickly

My first instructor taught me the first way. I was struggling with it. I kept stalling and felt no control over the car. I was used to always using gas on my motorcycle so it was frustrating. My second instructor had an old manual petrol and I had no choice but to learn the proper way if I wanted the car to move. Glad I changed!

I've seen this, Some instructors allow learners to use the clutch and brake only, when parking.

The right way is to have both feet on the pedals (clutch/accelerator), then lift or raise the clutch firmly until you reach the position where the engine speed drops slightly (biting point). Hold the clutch still there - at the same time give a little gas and then lift the clutch all the way up.
If you drive a diesel car, you can usually step off the clutch without gas!!

My instructor also never taught me this so I always stalled on hills. I learned clutch control in my brothers car.

My instructor tells me to do this! Doing it this way I always feel so slow entering roundabouts etc but I will keep this in mind for my next lesson

Excellent tip for learners. I did the clutch only in my instructors 1.6 diesel Kia CEED and passed my test. After passing i bought a 1.0 Petrol Peugeot 107, and found it would always stall, which really knocked my confidence massively.

My instructor taught me to look for the biting point first. So I always tried starting the car by finding the biting point and then pressing the gas.

When I passed my driving test and tried driving with my dad's petrol car, stalling became so much frequent. I couldn't understand why, I thought stalling wasn't an issue anymore.

I then heard the advice that I should start by pressing the gas first and then find the biting point. Once I mastered that, I stopped stalling, but yeah, 1)gently press the gas first, 2) find biting point 3) then control your speed with the clutch. That's the proper way. I stopped stalling by doing those 3 things.

Facts. I found this out myself a few weeks ago after driving with issues for months.

That trick only works when you've got a car that can actually handle it. If you're driving an older car, and you bring the clutch up without accelerating, then you will stall

THANK YOU!!! As a driving examiner in Sweden I can assure you this is better than just using the clutch!!!

My instructor taught me this method, and during my driving test, the car kept on switching off, fortunately for me I had a very understanding officer who was aware some driving instructor teach using that method.

Thanks for the advice
