Cereal is it’s own classification of food. It is always crunchy and sweet and has to be paired with milk. You may add cereal to soup, but that doesn’t change the fact that cereal is cereal and soup is soup. Two separate items eaten at different times of day.

Cereal isn’t soup as it’s cereal before being introduced to milk. It’s a good category on its own and is best enjoyed in milk but can be eaten without milk as well

We could just acknowledge that these words we use to categorize things are always going to be imperfect and inevitably allow things into the category that ought not be in it and disallow into the category things that ought to be in it. Is cereal a soup? I reject the category. It is merely digestible liquid food. I have transcended all food categorizations. I have reached the mountaintop and I see no soup. For in the end, we are all merely food thrust headlong into the gaping maw of eternity never to sate its appetite. There is no soup, only food.

Also: Coffee may be a form of bean soup under these loose conditions, especially when other ingredients (like milk) are added. Perhaps soup/not soup is down to amount/variety of ingredients?

You're looking at the wrong definition. Yes, soup is a liquid, but the definition of 'cereal' refers to the grain or solid portion, not the liquid. What you are calling cereal is really 'cereal in milk'. Take away the liquid (milk), you still have cereal in a bowl. So obviously you are wrong and cereal is NOT soup.

Cereal is cereal not because of the way it is served but because of what it is. Cereal is still Cereal even without milk which goes against the definition soup that says it has to be liquid. So, Cereal isn't soup but can be served like soup.
