The free African settlement of San Basilio de Palenque was established around 1603. Located at the bottom of the Montes de Maria Mountain in the Bolivar Department of the country of Columbia, near the city of Cartagena, sits the historical African settlement that still stands to this day. The word Palenque translates to “walled city”. The freed Africans who established the Palenque were known to frequently raid the slave plantations of Cartagena freeing a large number of slaves. Tune in!!

I used to live in Colombia and have been to several of these former slave refuses, but the question nobody has been able to answer: If they were fresh from Africa, and didn't even speak Spanish yet, why don't their descendants speak Africans languages in addition to Spanish, or something that is at least intelligible to West African languages, like Dutch and Africans or Norwegian and Icelandic.

Well done. I've been to Palenque, its quite the experience.
It was interesting how the tour guide told me about the different religions and spiritual beliefs but also said it was still a tight community and the cemetary was full of crosses but he also stated that people still practiced their different forms of spirituality from their varying roots i.e. Congo, Gold Coast, Gambia, etc.
They also don't have any police, they have men of the community that go around and check on people and settle disputes
