Risks of AI Unleashed: UAE's Spying and Surveillance Agenda
Показать описание
The latest player in the technical sphere, artificial intelligence (AI) is taking over the world. However, researchers and technologists, including Elon Musk, said AI development poses “profound risks to society and humanity”
A key innovator and CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman also said it poses serious, “existential risk” He said that the challenge was to manage the risks, while enjoying the benefits. AI grabbed the global attention with OpenAI’s popular chatbot, ChatGPT, which showcased AI’s potential to change how humans learn and work
Lawmakers had been working to examine such highly capable AI tools, which were pushing countries to opt for regulations for the developing technology. The UAE, however, had been on the other side of the picture. Activists and journalists constantly remain under radar in the country that uses spying software
The Emirates is an aggressive user of surveillance apps used to fetch user information. An Abu Dhabi royal, Tahnoun bin Zayed’s Group42 also introduced a video and voice calling app called ToTok, which was a spying tool for the Emirati government
G42 is also linked to DarkMatter, a security firm that hired former CIA and NSA officials to hack the Emirati targets. Despite its controversial history with technology, the UAE introduced its own AI-powered chatbot, U-Ask. It was designed to allow users to access information about government services
While data security remains a concern with any AI tool, it becomes even more sensitive in the Emirates, a country active in espionage. Although the Arab nation has just stepped into the world of competent AI, it will not take much time to exploit the technology for spying and surveillance.
