Easy fix. Ship Dolphin without Nintendo's proprietary key, and allow the users to supply it. Dolphin wont be guilty of distributing the key.

The easiest way for them to fix it would be to simply remove the code and redirect to a tutorial on how to dump the files yourself. What baffles me the most is the fact that Nintendo is going after the steam version instead of the github if that's truly the issue. The whole part about Dolphin stifling innovation over disturbing a key from an old system that's no longer produced or maintained is just hilariously stupid to me though. Imagine being sued by a car manufacturing company for stifling innovation because you were selling parts for a 40+ year old car model.

Dolphin should just remove the Wii Common Key from the app, and add a box in the option "Add your own key", where people can add any key (including the Wii Common Key they can find online).

I'm thankful that a tech channel this size still remains critical of the kind of bs that games publishers are pulling, and spreading the good word of emulation. Thousands of classic games would've remained abandoned and unplayable if not for our ability to load them up on pc.

Honestly, open-ended in-game dialogue is probably the best use I've ever heard for generative AI. This wouldn't even really impact any jobs since you'd still need to provide the AI with background on each character, the more detailed the better I would think.

A key is not code, and a key (ie. a number) being copyrightable is an untested (and frankly wrong) legal theory, especially when the DMCA explicitly allows for format shifting as an exception, which Dolphin absolutely is used for.

Nintendo didn’t send a cease and desist, Valve contacted Nintendo about the emulator and Nintendo asked them to take it down.

What's hilarious is that it's super simple to install the Dolphin emulator through the steam deck desktop mode. Keeping it out of Steam only prevents the most basic users from installing it. 😂
