Also fun fact! Up until the early 1900s, women were actively discouraged from playing certain "classical" (orchestral, really) musical instruments such as the cello, the violin and the flute, or, at the very least, from playing them in public! The reason is because either women assumed "unsightly positions" to play it (cello, since you play with your legs spread and the instrument between them, it was considered "immodest"), or made "strange, unsightly faces" while playing it (violin, flute, especially flute and other wind and brass instruments). So yes, even our artistic skills and interests were limited by how attractive we looked while pursuing them!
