There's a 'slave wall' in Medford, MA?

In 1765 a Black man named Pomp built a decorative wall for the estate of Thomas Brooks in Medford, MA. Pomp’s legacy lives on today through the wall that still stands-- talk about masonry skills!

Pomp was enslaved to Thomas Brooks. The Brooks family was very prominent in Medford, setting roots back in 1679 with 400 acres of woods and farm.

While the Brooks family is remembered for generosity/philanthropy, they were involved in the intricate web of the transatlantic slave trade.

The family reached their highest-ever level of influence through Peter Chardon Brooks, who became a millionaire as a marine insurance provider...insuring ships that carried commodities like sugar, cotton, coffee and African people to enslave 😳😬

Every time I see a really old rock wall, I think to myself that a slave probably built it.
