About the showering thing - i served in the military, and for 3 years have showered with the same ppl. Some times if we just came back from a mission we would wait for each other so we can go together. It was a very social thing and a rare chanse to spend a non stressfull time with the other girls.
Depending on the base, some times the showers werent divided, other times they were.

I can very much relate to the guy. After a while you dont care and it actualy helped some of us with body image and got us closer.
Never a sexual thing, always felt safe.

Public and family bathing was quite common in centuries past, and even married couples have separate bedrooms and beds as early as 1900s. if the home hasn't been majorly renovated you can often find these type of homes that are more or less setup like today's duplexes.
