During the pandemic I dumped my coffee cans of bolts and screws, sorted them and put them in bins. 😄

The only thing I do different is I follow the pick it up once rule.
I have collected numerous bins and racks over the years. If I have bolts or screws that don't have a current use or home they go into the bins by size.
No point sorting through the same pile more than once.

I once bought two five gallon buckets of newly CAD-II plated random bolts for Porsche engines from an estate sale for $5 ea. I’ve been living on that horde for decades.
My whole farm is held together with Porsche bolts! 🙌 😂

Oh, those treasures troves. Grade 2 to 8, buckets with a large cookie sheet, puts a smile on every mechanic face.😂

Hi. I'm Mike and I'm a bolt and nut and washer and fastener-of-any-kind hoarder. As was my father before me. I inhereited his hoard that were kept in Skippy peanut butter jars when they were glass with tin lids. The complete satisfaction when you find a match after a long sift is intoxicating. Yeah I'm old😅

I learned DECADES ago, NEVER THROW OUT A FASTENER!
I spend summers on an Island where trips to the hardware store require a boat ride. My Grandfather collected fasteners this way, my Father collected fasteners this way, I collect fasteners this way, my Son will collect fasteners this way. He doesn't know it yet, but it's genetic.

So true! One of the traits of a mechanic is that they keep anything that they deem to be of use in the future. My father and the mechanic where I work both have done this. 😊⛳️😁

I can so relate to that;
Back in the 90s, foul weather for several days so I couldn't work, sitting on my living room floor, 705 gallon buckets full of nuts bolts screws and hardware from construction sites, finally sorted an organized it all...

Nowadays hardware prices are just ridiculous, a bucket of nuts and bolts spacers and oddball bracket type pieces of hardware is absolutely solid gold...!!!

I have a bucket of bolts that have saved me dozens of times. Before I dispose of anything I remove all the nuts, screws, and bolts. It’s good to know that I’m not alone!

I thought I had a bolt hoarding problem. You are a full blown addict.😂😂😂

You have more than most hardware stores that’s great. Saved you from running all over town to try to find the right bolt. Well done.

I'm a retired owner operator, and I saved every thing. A friend came over and asked how much I saved, I said it would be easier to tell you what I didn't. Weeks later he called and asked if I had a air compressor governor for a Bendix compressor. Yep I said I have two. Now you know why I told him .

Better yet, sort all those accordingly into sizes, then put into part drawer bins / storage trays. This alone has saved me hundreds of hours digging out the one needed.
If you don't think it is worth it then you have never worked flat-rate!
Time IS money!

True story! Can confirm! I usually puck up a can or bag or two of random hardware at my local thrift shop or yard sale and add it to my stash in my "workshop of many blessings, " so when im presented with such a quest, i can usually get what i need. This has boggled many contractors and handyman helpers.
