“Chkdsk Cannot Run Because the Volume Is in Use by Another Process”

Показать описание
☑️ Chkdsk checks your disk for errors at a low level, requiring exclusive access to the disk to do so. "Chkdsk cannot run... Volume is in use" means it doesn't have the exclusive access it needs.

CHKDSK and a disk in use
– Chkdsk requires exclusive access to a disk in order to make repairs.
– “Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process” results when any other program is accessing the hard disk.
– Windows itself is often that other program.
– Running Chkdsk as part of the next system boot is the most common solution.

mine says: ... may run if the volume is dismounted first. all open handles to this volume would then be invalid. would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (y/n)

If you think a drive has a problem make sure your data is backed up first. I had a thumb drive show a problem on copy, I then ran MS error check w/ fix selected and after that failed the drive was no longer readable, cleanable or formatable on either windows or linux, so whatever problem it had during copy, the error check seems to have possibly finished it off as it won't even mount now, so don't trust your existing data to a check disk or error check, always backup if needed first then research the problem. Lucky for me the thumb was a backup media and I had all that data somewhere else also, the drive was probably 6 years old.

I wanted to run a read-only chkdsk on the C drive in Safe Mode, I got the message "Chkdsk might report errors when no corruption is present" and run until it freeze at 30%. I don't know why. As it is a surface scan, it is safe to cancel. So, the only solution is to run "chkdsk c: /f" and reboot so it performs the scan. Windows always surprises me. Which shouldn't be because it isn't a Stable OS.

When I do that, it says something like: 'Scanning and repairing C:' but then, it simply boots Windows without me even clicking any button if I were to skip it...
