Love how Shinji completely stops laughing right after he said his comment because he realized how embarrassing it was. This show does a really good job at portraying characters realistically, with Shinji trying to create small talk in the most awkward way possible.

Many of you pointed it out wrong, she is not repulsed or embarrassed by being compared to a mother, she is flattered and interested that for the first time someone sees her as more than just the pilot of eva-00 and a mere tool.

This scene was awkward as hell and that last comment by Shinji was ridiculous, which is exactly why this scene felt so authentic and realistic to me. Actually seeing Rei blush and hearing her flustered voice at the end adds to the awkwardness of the whole thing; before that, Rei had basically always been stoic, so for Shinji's words to actually cause her to show emotion means that what he said was really, really unexpected.

Shinji is a flawed person, and he is depicted exactly as such. That's good. A 14 year old with that many problems should be a walking mess, and so he is.

this scene in particular was always so interesting to me. shinji tries to have some contact with rei, but when he realizes that it's not working out, he stops. it's pretty realistic for me. i also like rei blushing at what shinji said because it leaves a lot to interpretation, maybe she knows something about her origin, maybe she's blushing because who said this was shinji, maybe she really doesn't know what to think and/or say (which wouldn't be a surprise). evangelion is really good in being interesting in regards to it's characters with these small dialogues, and sometimes, even the lack of dialogue.

i dont see rei as being embarrassed here. shinji literally fell on and groped her exposed breast and she didnt bat an eye. i think shes just very aware she isn't human (she floats around in a damn test tube), is very unsure as to the nature of her identity, and is overwhelmed when someone actually acknowledges her, maybe for the first time, as something more than a puppet only alive to pilot eva for gendo. shinji recognizes her as a person with agency who can fall in love and have children, something she was never able to see herself as. her "looking" like a mother in the eyes of others gave her reason to see herself in the same way. if not as an actual mother, then as a true, living being.

Shinji got in her feelings telling her that she could have a future as someone's partner. Then realized her feelings were astray to her purpose of existing by Gendos will. That last moment before it cuts to Shinji is her putting aside her feelings and refocusing into her mission before dismissing what Shinji said.

When I first watched Eva I knew literally nothing and came to the conclusion that Rei was a clone. When I asked a friend "Hey is Rei a clone of Shinji's mom or something?" after I watched this episode he tried his best not to spoil anything lol.
