I have been cow kicked by my horse while standing at the 45 degree angle. She kicked forwards from her back legs and hit me in the thigh while i was standing in front of her front legs dont know how it happened but goes to show no rule is hard and fast. We've come far however and there is a good level of trust beteeen us

When I get my horse, it's bull riding helmets, motorcross boots, and any other practical protective clothing. The whole western wear gear is not always practical.
