Today, I walk around UC Berkeley CalHacks and ask tech interns where they've worked and how much they make. Some of these numbers will shock you.

And then there’s me applying to internships everyday and never hearing anything back 😂

To anyone feeling discouraged, I go to a low ranked state school and never got an internship. I was simply never good at the interviews. I work in the field of data science, and it’s very competitive without a masters.

I did not give up and now, I am joining Microsoft in summer 2023. All paths aren’t equal, keep your head up!

I never interned during my school. My first job paid 40k per year, one year later second job paid 65k,
Couple of years later 105k,
4 years later 300+
You can always catchup in software engineering.

As a third-year cs college student that never worked an internship, this video was tough to watch but makes me determined to land an internship soon.

Most of these interns make 2-3x more than what the average person in America makes full time (hourly)! This is some great motivation for those in CS/looking to get in.

as discouraging as it is to watch this video and compare it to ur current situation, i can give you some twinkling of hope. i never interned. i found my first job 6 months after college making 50k a year. 2.5 years after that, i landed my first big tech job which gave my total comp of >250k. no matter your situation, just keep putting in the work and i promise you will see the result.

Seeing a lot of commenters feeling discouraged, just know that the two main schools these students went to (UC Berkeley and USC) are probably a big part of why they are in such incredible internships. If you aren't going to a school of this caliber, you just have to face the facts that you'll have to work harder to get to this same place. I think the reality of it is that most people will not be able to get this level of internship BUT once you're a few years into your career the gap between you and these people will narrow considerably and you can start competing with them more easily.

If anyone is feeling discouraged, here is a reality check:

California is generally an expensive place to live so to balance the living costs, the pay is generally higher. Also, UC Berkley tuition must be ground-breakingly expensive!

Moral: row your own boat and steer the direction you wanna go. That’s what these students are doing and they see the benefits of it!!

I had my first data analytics internship last semester making $18/hr, this motivated me to work way harder. All the people in this video are amazing!

Some of the interns we get are honestly better than some of our mid level engineers. The level of competition is insanely high. The ones that get the offers have some of the most insane resumes I’ve ever seen. Starting companies, saving the planet, tons of awards, presidents of engineering clubs, FAANG internships their freshman year, etc. all before they are 20 years old. It’s humbling talking to them.

I'm graduating in December and currently have one internship. And it only pays $15/hour. You guys out there make $50/hour. That's insane.

As a student who failed to get to the top IIT Colleges in India and ended up with a degree in CS, this video motivated to take up farming 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣.

These internship salaries are phenomenal. Wages in Europe are not even comparable! (I live in France and top firms only pay 2k€/3k€ per month)

I never got any fancy internships. I went to grad school, studied theoretical physics, and now my first job I’m making $126/hour in Silicon Valley. Internships definitely help, but they aren’t necessary. Just get comfortable being able/willing/excited to learn anything technical from scratch, no topic should scare you :D it’s not magic

All companies pay Interns in States? That's actually impressive. In Malaysia, not all companies willing pay Interns but taking Interns as cheap labor for them. If there are companies willing to pay interns, the interns only will earn around USD 80-200 per month. Not per hour but per month.

My internships 10 years ago were not offering this much. If I was a student now, I'd want to capitalize on these paid internships.
Interning as a freshman at Amazon for 9K a month!!! That amount is so wild to me.

As someone who is 29 years old finishing up my freshman year at a local community college for CS, this was pretty eye opening to say the least. I currently make $85-$187/hr as a utility contractor, however this is physical work, it's insane hearing how much these undergrads are making for their first job or internship. I can see I need to start working much harder.

1:32 this guy and I are pretty similar. I'm a senior Mechanical Engineering student and I just self-taught myself Python at the very beginning of the year. I landed an internship at a startup and they wanted me to either work in controls or data science. Turns out, the data science team had a lot more work and they decided to keep me for the fall semester as well for more data work! So I'm lucky enough to apply for both software and mechanical engineering roles and hopefully that gives me more options!

I was just wondering about how it’s been a while since I saw your video in my sub box. Glad you see you’re back!
