Actually, you can stand between two blocks, having to mine both in order to fall down a level. This way, you can make sure if there's lava right underneath, before you mine the other block.

In Minecraft, if you find a hole while digging diagonally, never go into that hole. That hole could lead you to a pool of lava or a pit of just death. Instead of going into that hole, you should dig diagonally somewhere else.
