It's mandatory if you trade for your diamond equipment from villagers, since they're often enchanted already. Disenchant those, and then you enchant them to your liking.

the grindstone gives and extra 5% durability when combining items unlike the menu and when repairing enchanted items it keeps the enchantment, unlike in your menu where it removes it

When repairing items in the grindstone, you get 15% more durability than you would through your inventory.

It's also useful for mob grinders with zombies/skeletons! You unenchant the armor drops, then chuck the iron/gold ones into a furnace and it gets nuggets! Not a reliable source of gold and iron of course but it's a nice little bonus!
