Mind Blowing Interchanges Around The World

Interchanges are great! Why? Because unlike standard intersections, they allow free flow of intersecting roads rather than having to stop at traffic lights or roundabouts. But sometimes interchanges can be extremely complicated with many junctions and even several levels (those are called stack interchanges). Such a complicated interchange is sometimes nicknamed “Spaghetti Junction“.

Let's have a look at the top 10 mind blowing interchanges around the world.

I would go miles out of my way to avoid these interchanges!

It would be nice if you would leave the view of the interchange on the screen for more than 2 seconds. You transitioned between scenes so quickly if we blinked we would miss it.

The High Five interchange in Dallas TX.

Gravelly Hill Junction (the ORIGINAL Spaghetti Junction) is so complex as it had to deal with the M6 motorway, the A38(M) and A5127 from the centre of Birmingham, the A5127 to Sutton Coldield and the A38 Tyburn Road. At the same time, the roadways had to avoid a canal, a railway line and what was the Nechells Power Station.

As an ex-Californian, I bring up east of downtown LA where I-5, I-10, US 101, and State 60 meet up. The typical reaction of drivers is "which lane should I be in?"

NY has interchanges like that and I’m always talking out loud to myself-“ I want to go RIGHT THERE! How the hell do I do that?!” 😂😂😂

could've mentioned what we call the "Mixmaster" in Dallas, TX. An interchange of I-35E, I-30, Woodall Rogers Fwy (Spur 366, connection to I-45 and US-75), Reunion Blvd, Riverfront Blvd, and Commerce St. Yes, all of that. I live in Dallas and fear this interchange.

I don't like these roads. Not because they are too complex, but they are signs of car-centric development.

I’m surprised you didn’t do the Houston’s I-10, 290, and 610 interchange.

I drive the South Bay interchange in Boston about three times a week.

It’s pretty normal. Sometimes you lose your GPS when you’re in one of the tunnels. No big deal.

I'm surprised that I-95 and Capital Beltway's interchange wasn't included

- the Sonnborner Kreuz in Wuppertal (A46, A535, B228 and L74)
- the Schkeuditzer Kreuz (from 1936) between Leipzig and Halle (A9 and A14)

I’m surprised you didn’t include any intersections from Dubai. There are so many intersections here.

When I saw the MD interchange in Baltimore I really thought the “Mixing Bowl” on the Virginia side of the Capital Beltway would have been on the list, oh well, an opportunity missed.

I've always thought our interstate system was absurd. There had to be a better way.

One weird one: the interchange between I-196 nad US 131 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Lanes of US 131 go over those from the opposite direction, allowing directional flow in all directions. Grand Rapids is tiny in contrast to some of the other cities here mentioned, but this is an old interchange
