I agree that housing affordability has a lot to do with the amount of supply. However, what about the cost of living outside of rent/mortgages? I would say taxes and just general pricing of everyday items are insane in New York. I hope we can tackle that too for everyday New Yorkers.

On Long Island, developers are mostly buildings luxury condominiums. Existing affordable housing, and even this plan give people that are disabled, and over 65 priority. Millennials and Gen Z have to live with their parents or have 3 room mates in a 1 bedroom apartment.

My parents have a house in long island and they wish they could turn it into a 2 family to get some aditional $$$ since its a big house for only 2 people. I don’t see what’s the issue with that. It’s not like they want to turn it into a 7 floor building in the middle of a quiet, suburban block lol.

I’ve met and talked to many landlords getting crushed with ridiculous property taxes ( some reach $20k a year) wishing they could legally rent out a space in their home for some relief Unfortunately zoning restrictions are a pain and it’s impossible as of now.

And all of this “affordable housing “ means $0.00 in property taxes since they will all be renters. The building owner will file for tax exemption for a business. The remaining residents will be left holding the bag. And then they better do something with not so nice bus. These will all be lower income people that depend on public transportation. The bus service is cut to the bone because 1) nassau county doesn’t want to invest in it and 2) most long islanders use cars because Long Island is not the shity. Most places people go have plenty of parking so we generally don’t depend on buses. “Affordable housing” renters will keep NCPD busy.

Affordable Housing is badly needed in southern NY. Many are leaving and not returning after hs/college.

Yeah I’m by 2028. I believe they claim that there’s going to be a ban on stoves in New York homes. You better leave now

This is excellent and long overdue. California has juuuust started to make inroads in fighting NIMBYs to help more housing get built.

SO MOVE!!! Nobody has the right to live where ever they want. Besides moving out of New York for any reason is instantly a life style improvement.

If the economy were truly "really strong", why would it take so much pressure on business owners to raise wages so that workers can afford rents? And this guy, Sentero or Centero is simply not being honest - people - regular, average people - are being squeezed and bled by inflation as the economy tilts towards recession. Finally, who owns most rental property in New York at this point?

Building housing projects should be up to a vote of the residents of the affected area. If the residents do not want the project in their community then it should not be built. Period. I live in a rural community about 18 miles from a decent size city. My community sets in a neighboring county to the one the city sets in. That is why we moved there was to get away from the city and what it brings with it. We have our own small shopping area and most of the people that work in the shops and stores live in our area. We do not have public transportation that connect us to the city either. We like it that way. About 5 years ago a developer bought a parcel of land from an estate. It sat undeveloped for about a year. Then word leaked out that the land management company was planning to build a housing project on the property. We were like no way do we want that here. To build the project they needed two things. To have the land rezoned from single family dwelling to multi family dwelling and they needed public transportation from the project to the city to get the grant money they were after. We we went to put county commission snd to make a long story short we blocked them on both fronts. We did not want the criminal element coming to our community that a housing project brings and we did not want the public buses in our community. They appealed and they lost a wealthy resident bought the property from them built a park and donated it to the county. We do not want the city invading our community and bringing its crime with it. So let the residents have a say.
