Shalom and welcome to the Parsha in 60 seconds

Today's portion is from Leviticus 25:1--26:2 it is called Behar which means "on the mount"

God gave the law of the Sabbatical year for the land in which every seventh year the people would not tend their fields but would eat anything that grew on its own. The sixth year crop was enough for three years. Every 50 years was the Jubilee year. When the horn blast all land holdings and debts were reset.
If a person got bad land, their relative would bail them out.

If you sold your home in a walled city, you have an entire year in which you could buy it back. After a year the sale was final. Country homes were subject to redemption and release through the jubilee.
Levites were to reside permanently in the cities of the Levites. Their land could not be sold.
Though owning slaves from other countries was allowed, indebted kinsman were to be treated as paid workers and not be charged interest for their debts. On Jubilee year they would be released.
If indebted to a resident alien, a relative could bail them out or the debter could pay the pro rata or wait until jubilee.

In America most people know of the Blacks from a few hundred years ago as slaves... it's a part of our history and it's what we know best. I wouldn't be too offended by that if I were you. If this were Germany or Israel portraying slaves it would probably have been illustrated different. It's just a geographically historical thing, that's all.
