Precious Moments as Baby Elephant, Khanyisa Tries to Play with Orphan, Timisa under Kumbura’s Watch

Khanyisa found time to play with her favourite playmate in this new day in the wilderness with her herd as she tries to sort with Timisa but Timisa is actively engaged in finding and pulling our roots to eat. Food trumps playtime and we know it’s likely Khanyisa has other things on her mind while trying to wrestle heads with her friend — i.e. stealing Timisa’s roots!

Khanyisa is still learning how to dig up and break roots for herself as she develops more strength and skills while learning from her elephant family. She is still two years of age — turning three in September (an approximate given by our wildlife vets since she is a rescued orphan).

Adine and Tigere help to feed the calf roots while Kumbura sweetly keeps a watch over her, protective and loyal as always. It’s endearing to see all the youngest orphans in the herd, foraging and socialising together contentedly in their wilderness.

Watch as Khanyisa picks up a graze on Adine’s knee! Elephants’ sense of smell is incredible and much more relied upon than their sight. Adine had been away for a few days and Khanyisa showed she had missed her human friend, wanting to play with her in the wild today too!

This trio of BFFs is the best. Hate that they were brought together under such sad circumstances, but their resilience to survive and thrive is the glue that makes them such a strong group.
