I once climbed that dome. I felt like the king of Florence once I was on top of it. Great memories. Thanks Ezio

The dome is not only beautiful and grand, but it is also an engineering and mathematical feat. Brunelleschi was a pioneer, a 100% Renaissance man.

The people who designed and created such marvelous structures were geniuses. This is gorgeous and brilliantly made. For all our modern depictions of the middle ages as backward, they really were no less capable than us in the grand scheme, I think. Thank you so much for sharing.
God be with you out there, everybody. ✝️ :)

The herring bone pattern exerts a force on each side of the buttresses which in turn supports the weight of the structure.

build with chisels and hammers all by hand and everything hauled by horse, Its very hand to imagine how they did it.

I remember this marvel from my highschool texts, apparently, during the meeting where all the major European (and not) "architects" where exposing their models and solutions to the Guild that took responsibility of finishing the Cathedral, Brunelleschi came up to the Committee not only with meticulous mathematical schemes (actual technical drawings!), but he also just smashed and egg on the counter saying that nature has already solved their every problem

Brunelleschi is credited for being the true first architect, he designed every step of construction with mathematical models and drawings, but most importantly he supervised the construction in person and designed the actual build sight, with movable scaffolding and cranes and overall greatly sped up and optimised the workflow of the workers

He's truly a renaissance man, from wondering about the natural world and taking inspiration from it (the solid structure of an eggshell), to looking to the ancients with reverance (the staggered "fishscale" bricks of the romans, the Pantheon's cupola), and incorporating the newest ideas and models (actively using mathematics and geometry for every step, planning ahead with purpose and with considerations for the workers)

However one shouldn't assume that any builder prior to him wasn't as skilled, I guarantee you they all used math and measurements, it's just that they didn't reach his meticulousness yet, which is why he's an important stepping stone

And a massive chain that wraps the base of the dome, not just masonry.

If this type of thing interests you, read The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. You won’t be disappointed.😊

No, the bricks didnt support themselves or stabilize on their own just from weight. Its the internal system of iron bar chains containing the stonework from spreading outword that locks it all together. .

It’s such a beautiful cathedral. I love going there at night to see it lit up. Florence is a magical city.

It’s also the world’s largest masonry dome ever made. Brunelleschi’s dome has an internal diameter of 45, 5 meters versus 43, 4m of Pantheon’s dome and 42, 5m of Saint Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. Regards from Florence⚜️⚜️⚜️
