I saw Pele play in a friendly in England for Santos against Sheffield Wednesday in about 1973. Also in the Santos team were Edu and the goalkeeper, Felix, both in the 1970 World Cup winning squad. Now, even though Pele himself stated that George Best was a better player than himself, and even though I am a Manchester United fan and saw George Best play over a hundred times, and idolised him as a kid, I disagree with Pele. As soon as I saw Pele touch a football in real life, ten metres away from me, I knew in a flash that he was better than Best. He is, as far as I'm concerned, the greatest footballer that I ever saw. He was magnetic for leather...

Pele is so good that people underplay him and insult him. We should however recognize greatness whenever we see one, and it doesn't matter who you think the goat of football is.

You drop pele into todays game with the training facilities, nutrition menu’s, training regime and pele would still be one of the greats. Talent goes beyond any era

I was privileged to see him play for Brazil in the 1966 World Cup. I was 11 at the time and my dad took me to watch Brazil v Bulgaria at Goodison Park. All the kids wanted to see him and get his autograph. He was roughly handled by the Bulgarian defence and he missed the second game against Hungary. Against Portugal, he played in pain and after one brutal tackle, he hobbled down the touchline a virtual passenger. I was so close to the pitch that I could see the look of pain in his face. I never listen to those who underrate Pele or try to diminish him. He was the greatest.

I had always thought George Best was the best player in the world. After I had the fortune to witness Pepe’s greatness during a friendly game played by Santos against Newcastle on June 4, 1972 in Hong Kong. Newcastle led 2-1 in the first half but Pele scored 3 fantastic goals in the second half to win the game. One of the goals was the best goal I have ever seen. Pele received the ball in the midfield from a overhead pass, he ran toward Newcastle’s goal touching the ball 7 times by his head, chest, thigh and feet while he ran passed 3 players and the ball never touched the ground and scored with a volley. He was like a magician performing acrobatics in full speed. There was a movie that came out and replayed that play 7 times. I kept going back to the theater to watch that play. I wish somebody had that movie or video to show Pele’s skills. He truly is the king and the best.

Pele was a legend to so many people in the 70s and 80s …people can say whatever now, but can’t change the history.

As an Argentine, even I recognize Pelé was up there with the very best, top of the top of the top. We could argue if he was the best or not, we can compare him to Maradona, but saying "Pelé was a fraud" is a crime against football and should be punishable by law. He did 50 years ago some of the plays that the best players of today days are praised for, and he played during a time in which there were very little technical advances in the design of footballers' equipment, so it was all natural born skills. Pelé is definitely a Legend.

I would make a correction though: Jairzinho wasn't the 1970 World Cup top-scorer, he was Brazil's top scorer. Gerd Müller was the top-scorer of that WC

It`s absurd not to recognize he is to football what Senna was to F1, what MJ is to basketball, what Usain Bolt is to athletism, what Mohammed Ali was to boxing, and so on.. He changed the game forever, and what you see in this sport today is only happening for what he did.

I remember a photograph where Pele was passing a sliding man and behind that man was 5 other men on the ground. The headline stated “sometimes even 6 is not enough”. To me he was the GOAT. ⚽️

There is no reason to defend Pele. If you don't think he's the GOAT, you don't know football.

Rest in peace king Pelé. Today we tend to forget about how this wonderful athlete has changed the sport forever. He was head and shoulders above his contemporaries. His legacy is nothing like the others. Rip Legend.

Pele was an amazing player, comparing a man that played in the 50's, 60's and 70's to 2022 4K, high resolution multi-billion dollar stadiums with air conditioning and drainage systems and multi million dollar salaries.

Pele was doing some skills 50 years ago that players do today, some players had second jobs and played football professionally on the side for extra cash.

Put Messi and Ronaldo in the 50s when the balls were 20kg and they played on dirt grass and flying tackles that broke you.

If it wasn't for Pele we wouldn't be here talking about football; Football at his time was obviously different, playing against clubs while at the National team was common place. Friendlies were never truly friendly. The man is a LEGEND!
