I also have a big ass compared to my waist. I've been lucky recently and found some pants that actually fit well off the rack at COS.
About bringing pants to the tailor, do you buy them so they fit your legs/ass then tell the tailor to make them fit your waist, too? Don't you then have the issue that you can put them on anymore afterwards?
