In 2011, Richards decided to climb Pakistan's notorious Gasherbrum II, a 21,000-foot peak, in the dead of winter. With no supplemental oxygen, facing temperatures of minus-50 degrees, his team set out, not realizing they'd face a devastating avalanche along the way. Some called a suicide mission.
