So if i remember correctly (been a while since I've studied squid) their camoflage is controlled neurally by using cells called chromatophores that are elastic and filled with pigment. Basically, what they do is stretch and expand (picture a balloon filled with ink, when its blown up the color will all gather in one spot making it brighter) these chromatophores using muscles and a complex array of nerves to control how bright the color is. They can also use these chromatophores to change the texture of their skin. Certain species also have iridiphores and leucophores. Iridiphores have stacks of plates that create iridescent greens, blues, and silvers. Leucophores act more as a mirror and reflect the color of the environment. Ocotpus are really good at using their camoflage but in general, octopi and squid are incredibly interesting and intelligent
