It may resemble a trowel, but the Nisaku Hori Hori is very much a real knife. It is used for gardening, and the blades make easy work of dividing plants and cutting through roots.

There is an assortment of models of Hori-Hori; some are made with full tangs and some have steel hilts and Rat tail tangs. Some have carbon steel forged blades and some use stainless steel blades. I once saw a model Martha Stewart endorsed on QVC years ago. I saw one that has a hollow handle that enables it to be made into a Spear. During the time of the Samurai; farmworker classes were forbidden to own weapons. Farm tools that could be transformed into spears in a pinch makes a work around of the law.
