This has got to be the most relatable thing on this channel and the major gripe I have with a lot of youtube videos. Like, why not make it a second long. And it's always the most trivial stuff, like correcting a tiny mistake or apologizing for audio problems that most people can't notice anyway.

Can't forget the part where you slow it down, making it easier to catch but also adds an excruciatingly long wait before the text finally shows up at then still blinks away too fast for you to pause in time.

There's also the one where the video is about a page long document, they flash it briefly in the beginning so you rewind and pause to read it, and then they spend the rest of the video going through it line by line

I just don’t get how okay movies like Taxi Driver and Apocalypse Now were awarded the Palme d’Or but a cinematic masterpiece like Shrek doesn’t even get nominated. Truly baffling

Sadly, you are correct. If Shrek did win at the festival and got the attention it deserved we would be on our fifth Shrek trilogy by now. Look at the insane oil prices and the ever-increasing crime rates, all happeing because we never got to the one where Shrek dives into the Morbiverse and spreads the message of love and acceptance, thus inspiring the global population to live peacefully forever after. But I guess we still gotta keep on living despite of the Shrek-shaped hole in all our hearts, don't we? ; )

Also, tip for this type of thing, if you're on computer, you can hit the comma and period button (the <> buttons) to move forward or back a frame in their respective direction.

My usual complaint is that the text is at the bottom of the screen, so it's covered by Youtube's video progress bar and various icons when paused.

I’ve literally spent several minutes growing increasingly frustrated and upset while slowing down the video to the lowest possible speed setting and frantically pausing over and over again, only to miss by a second and be forced to go back and watch the same portion of the video on the lowest speed setting for a painstakingly long time, just so I can miss it again, or actually pause it and see that they’ve just written ‘looks better in slow motion’

You can scroll through videos frame-by-frame using the, and . buttons after you pause! Makes finding millisecond-long flashes of text easier :)

One piece of advice my graphic design teacher gave me that I always remember in these cases is to “make sure you have enough time to read the lines in your head at least three times” and I am amazed about how many people I’ve seen who don’t have any semblance of something similar to this

Ah, the YouTube dark arts... Put text on the screen for slightly too short a duration, force viewers to roll the video back to catch it, in doing so slightly improve the average view duration of the video, thereby improving its performance in the eyes of the recommendation algorithm.

I am almost blind, so even very readable text is incredibly difficult for me to read sometimes. But I hate missing stuff, so I'll do this on tons of videos. Sometimes though, I'll turn down the speed controls, or use the frame by frame tool

I imagine this is for engagement. Having people continually pause and rewind your video probably helps the algorithm.
