A teenager in Britain has been cleared of cancer after a revolutionary new treatment for leukaemia. The treatment is called base editing, and involves genetically engineering a patient's DNA. Doctors have hailed its success as a breakthrough and say could be used to treat a wide range of other diseases.

I don't think it can be understated how much value this forward thinking research has in degenerative disease. My mother has MS, volunteered for a trial at Mayo clinic and now is REGENERATING where before they would have at most hoped for stabilization. These kinds of studies save so many lives. It truly makes me be grateful to live at a time where I can witness the innovation of creative scientists and the tenacity of a child who reminds me SO much of other children I personally know who didn't make it to age 15 let alone come close to a cure.

I hope they can try this with Neuroblastoma someday. It has awful life expectancy and Shriner's won't take children with it.

Amazing, positive story right before bed. I needed this uplifting news.

Base editing is not a cure, but something more: it is a new area of medicine. Like surgery or vaccination.
There will be thousands of specific treatments in this area, and hundreds of currently incurable diseases can be cured this way. But it will take time, and for some diseases it won't help.

Brave little girl. I’m so glad things worked out for her for now. I had a friend from NY here in Japan. He was diagnosed with the most aggressive form of leukemia when he was young. Then his leukemia went into remission magically. But it came back with vengeance after 20 years. I lost touch with him after his return to NY, and as I looked to get in touch with him, I learned that he died months after returning to the US. I was so saddened to learn he passed away so quickly and never had a chance to talk him again. Hopefully she can live normal healthy life but all the money he had and all the options he had available at his disposal, health is something you can’t buy with money.
