Kwanghee basically built his variety show persona around 'that guy who is honest about plastic surgery'. it worked for him, his group wasn't super successful but he's doing well now. most idols hide their plastic surgery because their agencies told them so, sometimes the agency was the one who persuaded them to get things done. idols are young, you have 16 year olds getting nose jobs 😬. Shinhwa was one of the first big groups and one of the members openly talked about his botched nose job being a gift from the ceo 😭

I appreciate Kwanghee's level of self-awareness and candor in describing how he sees himself before and after surgery. It really is a sensitive subject that needs to be explored further, since cosmetic surgery is often supposedly attributed with improving one's self-image and self-esteem.

I think Kwanghee's an exception in a lot of cases. Not only was he honest about the work he's done, but he's built his career on it. He's happy and he looks good. Win-win.

I love how polite and caring you are, not calling Khanghee ugly ""he has different facial features than his band mates". Super respect

When he was talking about how he still felt inferior because others were born with their good looks, it reminded me of the Korean drama My ID is Gangnam Beauty.

The main character was made fun of for being "ugly" then she got a lot of plastic surgery and she still didn't feel beautiful and felt inferior to "natural beauties". And people still gossiped about her and put her down for having plastic surgery, so you just can't win.

How could ANYONE confuse Botox with filler? Maybe as a patient… But as a provider!? Are you kidding??🤯

I taught English to many, many Korean students and they were very open about their plastic surgery. Once someone from elsewhere asked “are the parents ok with it?” And all the students from Korea laughed. They said their parents were the ones recommended it and it was a common graduation present 😭

Edit: this post got more attention than I thought. I wanted to share more context. It is not strictly for vanity that plastic surgery is so common in Korea. Getting the best employment position possible after graduation is super important in this culture, and sets the conditions for what is considered a good life. Well, it’s no secret that good looks give you a leg up. That is pretty much universal.
Also, please don’t get me wrong, I ❤️ the Korean people 🇰🇷They are beautiful with or without the plastic surgery, hilarious, charming, smart, incredibly ambitious, and make the best food 🥹

I wish Hollywood and news anchors would stop getting all the botox and fillers. It really does interfere with facial movement. Plus, it seems to stigmatize aging in general, imo.

I sometimes look at some Korean celebrities (both male and female) and I cannot help but think that so many of them don't look as beautiful as they used to, despite the fact that they undergo those procedures to fit the beauty standards more. Especially extreme jaw reduction or jaw fillers to achieve the v-line jaw, as mentioned in the video. Sometimes it looks too exaggerated to the point that other facial features seem too big giving them almost an alien look - Taeyeon, Sunmi or Chungha are the examples that come to my mind. And it's so scary that this trend thrives among younger idols, some of the members from the groups like NCT or aespa don't look like themselves anymore. And to think that those are people barely in their 20s. The industry pressure is insane.

It's just think it's such a shame that these people are so young when they first dip into plastic surgery.

Kwanghee is a very lovely person. He is honest and caring. He's survived in the entertainment industry without any rumor or trouble. He doesn't have drug, alcohol or any other problems that ruined other celebs in Korea.
His plastic surgery is not very successful. I agree with that but because his personality makes people love him since he debuted more than 10 years ago.

Dr. Linkov, I'm so happy to see that your hair is coming back. You are a very nice looking man, but mainly it's your congenial personality and genuinely kind nature that makes you so special. 😍

i think a video about the history of v line surgery would be cool. as far as i know the procedure was invented as a facial feminization surgery as this one San Francisco clinic had lot of trans patients that looked for a way to ease their dysphoria. ID hospital in Korea patented their way of doing it but it was much later. it's very invasive procedure, like my jaw is very strong, very square and i looked into that surgery but the cost + risk made me change my mind 😔

I’d love to see a video talking about plastic surgery in South Korea and how it’s similar and different than the US. I’ve heard how big it is there and that many travel there for the surgeries.

Now THAT is an interesting topic! The beauty trends in Asia are something else.

Kwang hee is one of the nicest guys in Korean entertainment industry. He is really honest, openminded, friendly person, a devout Christian who is brave enough to talk about his faith on national broadcast television.
His group, Zea (Children of Empire) was not very successful in the beginning and Kwang hee was the only person who had gained fame through reveling the fact that he had several plastic surgery when he got invited on a popular Korean game show.
He later said that he openly talked about it because he wanted to be re-invited for extra income no matter what and support his group members.
It was only after Kwanghee sacrificed his self image that his group started to get recognitions, and let me tell you what, Kwanghee is one of the most beloved entertainment personalities in S. Korea not because of his looks but for his honesty, loyalty, kind and funny personality.

I was a teacher in Korea in 2015 and a 13 years old korean girl talked to me about how she wanted to get the double eyelid surgery done and how her mother would pay for it once she's old enough. It made me so sad. When I was 13 I was still happy playing with sticks I found in our garden. I tried to convince the girl that her eyes were very beautiful the way they were (and they really were) but I don't think it made any difference :/

Gary is so nonchalantly CUTE and RESPECTFUL. I always feel serene whenever I watch his videos even though he’s talking about botched plastic surgeries 😋
