As an Irish girl who loves discovering new music, today I’m listening to Def Leppard’s iconic song Pour Some Sugar On Me for the first time! I’ve heard so much about this legendary 80s rock band, but nothing prepared me for the energy and vibe of this track. Join me as I react to the beats, guitar riffs, and catchy lyrics of this classic anthem!

🎸 Some of my favorite lyrics: "Pour some sugar on me, ooh, in the name of love!"

This song is a total blast, and I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to experience it. Let me know in the comments what other rock songs I should check out next!

Talk about band loyalty! Drummer loses an arm in an accident and the boys rally around him and he recovered and kept playing with the band!!😊😊😊😊

Def Leopard was a staple of MTV in the 80s. So many great songs.

The drummer’s bandmates are class acts. They made him learn to play one armed, so he could keep playing with them.

And here's a little Def Lep trivia for our hostess...

In 1984, Rick Allen lost his arm...that part you already knew.
This past Sunday (9/8), Def Lep wrapped up their most recent tour...and, yep, Rick Allen is still going strong on the drums. His nickname? "The Thunder God".

7:26 the moment Diane realized that Rick Allen only had one arm. I remember back in the 80s there was a rumor that he kept his arm preserved in a jar. Dunno if it's true.

My daughter, when she was a teenager, back in '08 or '09 went to see them, Cheap Trick, and Foreigner. At some point during the show, while Def Leppard was on she sent me a text " Dude, the drummer only has one arm! I want to have one arm." Kids say the craziest things.

Ok so how many people were wondering how long it would take Diane to notice that the drummer had one arm?

Only me?

LOL

Sorry Diane love you!

One of their current guitarists “Vivian” Campbell, from Ireland, has a younger brother who works as a pilot for the same airline I work for. He’s a friend of mine because we were hired the same year back in 2000. Since we were both based in Chicago, we used to commiserate about oddball, “Tool” Captains we had to fly with as new First Officers. Now we are Captains. Hopefully nobody thinks we are “Tools” to fly with !😳

This song reminds me of my childhood, it was wildly popular. MTV would play this song every 15 minutes or every half hour something like that. I remember my sister and I rushing home from dinner at night to run into the living room and catch this song. It was only as an adult I figured out with the song was about. As a seven-year-old I had no clue lol

Diane is so dedicated to her sponsors that she'll put on an entirely different outfit for the promo.

I'm still blown away by the incredible talent and perseverance of drummer Rick Allen! The way the camera angles highlight his one-armed drumming skills is a testament to his adaptability and dedication to his craft. It's even more inspiring when you consider that Rick lost his left arm in a car accident in 1984, but the band refused to let that hold him back. They worked with him to develop a custom drum kit that allowed him to continue playing, and the rest is history. Rick's determination and the band's loyalty are a true rock 'n' roll story. He's an amazing drummer and an inspiration to anyone who's ever faced adversity. Def Leppard deserves so much respect for keeping Rick on board and allowing him to continue doing what he loves.

This definitely brings back some memories. I saw them live on the tour that coincides with the time frame of this video. The most unique feature of this tour was that most of the shows were "in the round", which you can get a sense of from the video. At the time it was a fairly novel concept to see a metal band interacting with the crowd on all sides. I'm sure there were others before, but it was new to me at the time.

Photograph is one of their earliest hits and is really cool.

The song was used in the movie "Balls of Fury", about a guy taking part in a Ping Pong Tournament like Enter The Dragon complete with Christopher Walken as the evil Warlord

The fact that the drummer lost his arm and the band never gave up on him is awesome

I was at the concert when they shot this video. It was at the time at an arena called Brendon Byrne arena in the Meadowlands in NJ. It has a different name now. Didn't realize that a buddy of mine had seats on the floor (I was in the upper deck) until I saw him in the video.

There's also a bit of resemblance between "Pour Some Sugar on Me" and "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. I think you're right about the three-chord rule. Songs that use the same chords tend to sound similar. In jazz there's something called a "contrafact, " which is a piece that's deliberately based on an existing song. Examples include Thelonious Monk's "In Walked Bud" (based on Irving Berlin's "Blue Skies"), Duke Ellington's "Cotton Tail" (based on George and Ira Gershwin's "I Got Rhythm"), and George Shearing's Lullaby of Birdland" (based on Walter Donaldson's "Love Me or Leave Me"). You can sing or play a contrafact on top of the song it's based on without them clashing with each other.

Glam rock as a category has more to do with what they look like than the music itself. Glam rock bands (which include glam metal) use things like makeup, platform shoes, glitter, etc. David Bowie was one of the leading glam rock performers.

I looked up musicians and bands from Sheffield. One of the most famous is the singer Joe Cocker. Another is The Human League. The band Pulp is also from Sheffield—curiously, their lead singer, Jarvis Cocker, is not related to Joe Cocker.

The word "def" is slang for "excellent" in the American Black community. That doesn't seem to have anything to do with Def Leppard, though. I think Joe Elliott and Tony Kenning were probably not aware of this when they named the band.

How about reacting to Blondie? You'd probably recognize some of their songs. Their biggest hits are "Heart of Glass, " "Call Me, " "The Tide Is High, " and "Rapture." There's a really good video of "Heart of Glass" on the BlondieMusicOfficial channel on YouTube that would be good to react to.
