in my case when i click on typing tool it doesn'nt type and after that i cant use any tool bcz the normal cursor is not coming back a im not able to click or access any other tool not even close window option. i have to end the task through task manager or else im stuck with photoshop

When I go to Edit, and the drop down, there is no Preferences there. So it's probably changed since when you posted this. I'll just let it be for the moment. Haven't found one solution so far online.
